With qualifying set for next week, the election-year scramble by politicians to decide what office they're actually going to seek kicked into high gear this week.

At the same time, a federal judge and the U.S. Department of Justice moved to try to make clear what was necessary for groups registering the voters who will choose between those candidates -- and whether some already-registered voters could remain on the rolls.

Rick Scott Names Donald H. Mason to 20th Judicial Circuit Court

Gov. Rick Scott announced today the appointment of Donald H. Mason, of Punta Gorda, to the 20th Judicial Circuit Court.

Dons long career in law enforcement, as both a police officer and prosecutor, combined with his years of private practice, make him uniquely prepared to serve on the bench, Scott stated in a release. Throughout Dons career, he has demonstrated his intelligence, fairness and dedication, and I have every confidence that he will bring these qualities to his new position.

Ken Detzner: No One Has Been Denied a Right to Vote

Secretary of State Ken Detzner defended efforts to remove noncitizens from the lists of Florida registered voters in the wake of the U.S. Department of Justice questioning the legality of the process.

As Floridas chief elections officer, I am committed to ensuring the accuracy of Floridas voter rolls and the integrity of our elections. It is my duty to protect the right of all eligible voters who are able to participate in the process, Detzner stated in a release Friday.

Dave Weldon: I'm the 'Authentic Conservative' in U.S. Senate Race

After Mike Haridopolos, Adam Hasner and Jeff Atwater successively bowed out of the GOP race for U.S. Senate, ex-U.S. Rep. Dave Weldon says he is taking his turn as the "authentic conservative."

In an exclusive interview with Sunshine State News, the former seven-term Republican congressman and currentphysician specializing in internal medicine acknowledges his late entry presents an uphill challenge.

"I thought Haridopolos would have made a great senator," Weldon said of his fellow Melbourne-area resident.

Endurance Specialty Signed as Florida’s 19th Reinsurer

The Florida Office of Insurance Regulation has signed a consent order that allows underwriters at the Bermuda-based Endurance Specialty Insurance Ltd. to operate in Florida as a reinsurer.

Florida allows ceding insurance companies to receive full credit on their financial statements for reinsurance purchased from non-U.S.-based reinsurers that are highly rated and financially sound.

Endurance reported capital and surplus of $2.4 billion on their year-end financial statement, exceeding the states $250 million requirement, according to the OIR.

Pam Bondi Orders 411-PAIN to Change Advertising

The attorney generals office has ordered 411-PAIN to change its advertising practices and make a $550,000 charitable contribution, as part of a settlement in Broward Circuit Court on Friday.

We are protecting consumers by requiring 411-PAIN to change its representation of services and its advertising practices, Attorney General Pam Bondi stated in a release.

FOX News: George Zimmerman Ordered Back to Jail

Neighborhood watchman George Zimmerman has been given 48 hours to return to jail for failing to fully disclose his finances, FOX News is reporting.

Zimmerman faces a second-degree murder charge in the Feb. 26 shooting of 17-year-old Trayvon Martin in Sanford.

Legislative, Congressional Qualifying Begins Monday

Despite voter-approved changes to the way Floridas legislative and congressional districts were redrawn, the makeup isnt showing much of a shake-up as the election cycle formally kicks into gear next week.

The official qualifying period for the 2012 legislative races runs from noon Monday to noon on Friday, June 8, but the gates have already been filling up.

An early offshoot of the makeup of the candidates is that the 2016 Senate president aspiration of Sen. Jack Latvala, R-St. Petersburg, may be a little shaky.
