Rick Scott Defends Herschel Vinyard over Permitting Suspension

Gov. Rick Scott defended his top natural resources watchdogover the suspension of a wetlands expert who refused to issue a permit to a North Florida company that wanted to use its land to offer businesses wetlands credits.

Florida Department of Environmental Protection Secretary Herschel Vinyard has done a great job, Scott responded Wednesday, when asked if he is satisfied in how the matter was handled.

The business community this week offered a split decision in one of the most competitive and compelling Republican primaries in the Sunshine State -- the battle to replace term-limited state Sen. Steve Wise, R-Jacksonville.

With Wise facing term limits, three prominent Republicans -- former Rep. Aaron Bean, Rep. Mike Weinstein, R-Jacksonville, and attorney Wyman Duggan -- are competing to represent parts of Nassau and Duval counties.

Bean announced on Wednesday that he had garnered the endorsement of the Florida Chamber of Commerce.

Judicial Retention Battle Builds With Complaint Against Barbara Pariente

A gadfly, disbarred attorney has filed an official complaint over state Supreme Court Justice Barbara Pariente's partisan remarks at a South Florida synagogue.

In a letter to the Judicial Qualifications Commission, Jack Thompson, of Coral Gables, called Pariente's speech "partisan, issues-related, evocative of her religion, and violative of various judicial canons."

The assessment calculator can be used by consumers to estimate their liability in case of a one-in-25-year storm, a one-in-50-year storm and, as a worst case scenario, a one-in-100-year storm.

Rick Scott Quietly Signs Four Bills for Law Enforcement

With copper approaching $4 a pound, law enforcement officials thanked Gov. Rick Scott as they attended a semi-private bill-signing ceremony Wednesday that increases the penalties for thieves cashing in on stolen metal.

The bill, HB 885, was one of four bills that Scott signed Wednesday during a brief meeting with law enforcement officials in his Capitol office.

We all had a good session, Scott told the officers. We got a lot of things done for law enforcement.

The event, initially closed to the media, was opened with only a few media questions allowed.
