Florida Slot Revenue is Ringing Up a Record

The Florida economy is staggering and Floridians aren't exactly flush with disposable income, but you wouldn't know it from the record-breaking level of slot play in the state.

The Florida Current reports that through the first 11 months of the 2011-2012 fiscal year, more than 6,400 slot machines have pulled in $373.6 million, 4.6 percent more than all of last year.

Rick Scott Plans Five More County Business Round-tables

Gov. Rick Scott will keep his business round-table caravan moving for a second day across northern Florida.

Todays schedule has the governor in Bradford, Union, Baker, Columbia, Hamilton and Suwannee counties.

9 a.m.: Bradford County, Gov. Charley E. Johns Conference Center, 1610 North Temple Ave., Starke.

10:45 a.m.: Baker County, MacClenny Chamber of Commerce, 20 East Macclenny Ave., MacClenny.

1:30 p.m.: Columbia County, Florida Gateway College, Wolfson S. Rivers Media Center and Library, 149 Southeast College Place, Lake City.

Melissa Meeker, executive director of the South Florida Water Management District, unveiled on Monday a draft settlement to a 24-year-old environmental lawsuit. The suit has dragged on for 24 years and cost taxpayers millions of dollars in useless attempts to restore the Everglades.

Chairman: BOG 'Remains Concerned' About FAMU Situation

On the same day that James Ammons, Florida A&M University president, spelled out how to deal with the fallout of a hazing scandal that has rocked the university's band, the chairman of the Florida Board of Governors outlined a series of concerns it wants the school to address in Ammons' next evaluation.

"The Board of Governors remains concerned with the number of serious issues that continue to mount at Florida A&M University," chairman Dean Colson wrote in a letter to Solomon Badger, who chairs the FAMU board.

Without Sandy Adams This Time, Another Call to Hold Eric Holder in Contempt

A resolution calling for the House to hold U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder in contempt has garnered the signatures of 118 House members.

But Rep. Sandy Adams, one of Holder's leading critics, has not signed on. Instead, the Orlando Republican is going her own way.

"The congresswoman reads every bill before co-sponsoring and she had concerns about the language of the personal references in the resolution," Adams' spokeswoman Lisa Boothe told Sunshine State News on Monday.

'Stand Your Ground' Task Force to Meet in Longwood Next Tuesday

The governors Task Force on Citizen Safety and Protection will convene its second meeting in Central Florida June 12.

The task force will take public comment on the state's "Stand Your Ground" law at 1 p.m. at NorthLand Church, 530 Dog Track Road, Longwood.

Formed by Gov. Rick Scott following the shooting of Trayvon Martin by neighborhood watch member George Zimmerman in Sanford, the task force, and the self-defense law, have come under heavy pressure.

Do Not Call, Telemarketing Top Complaints by Floridians

Do Not Call, Telemarketing and Credit Banking continue to dominate the complaints of Floridians, according to Commissioner Adam Putnam.

The three topics dominated the monthly list of calls from Floridians to the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services 1-800- HELP-FLA consumer hotline in May.

More than 3,900 complaints were filed by consumers in May, during which time the department received 26,024 calls and 2,175 emails for consumer assistance and information.
