Florida Closes Escambia's Near-Shore Waters to Fishing

Though state waters in Escambia County had been closed to saltwater fishing for less than a day, some of the areas fishing-related businesses Monday afternoon were already fretting the loss of customers.

Today weve done about $20 in business, said Doug Vance, owner of Grays Tackle and Guide Service.

Sink Using Campaign Site to Lobby Obama on Gulf Oil Spill

This is an interesting tactic to get visitors to a political Web site. State CFO Alex Sink is using the Web site for her gubernatorial campaign to send messages to her fellow Democrat, President Barack Obama, about the Gulf Coast.

It's not every day you have the president's ear, wrote Sink in an e-mail to her supporters. But tomorrow I will be with President Obama as he tours Florida's Gulf Coast, and sees for the first time how BP's oil leak is impacting Floridians.

State Wants to Track Green Jobs

Is your business going green? The state agency that tracks work force statistics wants to know.

The Agency for Work Force Innovation is completing the first statewide registry of green jobs, and is sending surveys to 60,000 businesses to find out how many green jobs are being created.

Bill McCollum's offensive against Rick Scott's well-publicized "mistakes" at Columbia/HCA is shining a light on McCollum's own health-care record in Congress.

Anyone who's been paying attention to the increasingly acrimonious Republican gubernatorial campaign knows by now that Scott was chairman and CEO of the HCA hospital chain when it was fined $1.7 billion by federal authorities.

Peter Allen Jumps Back in Race for Governor

Peter Allen, who pulled out of the gubernatorial race on Thursday, is back in the race.

The founder of the Independence Party said this morning that he had decided to run. He filled out his paperwork and sent it off to Tallahassee.

Allen, a small-business owner, founded the Independence Party as an alternative to the two major parties. While the Independence Party of Minnesota, best known for backing Jesse Ventura, helped with some of the paperwork at the founding, the Independence Party of Florida is not affiliated with any national parties.

On Monday former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney, best known for his stab at the 2008 Republican presidential nomination and widely considered a candidate for the GOP nod in 2012, backed Attorney General Bill McCollum for governor and offered endorsements for other Sunshine State Republicans.

Attorney General Bill McCollums campaign for governor just won the backing of one of the most prominent Republican leaders in the nation -- former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney. With McCollum facing a challenge on the right from health care executive Rick Scott, Romneys endorsement comes at a moment when the attorney general needs a boost. One poll last week showed him losing to Scott by 13 points.
