Mitt Romney Kicks Off John Thrasher's Re-election Bid at Jax Fund-raiser

Republican Party of Florida Chairman John Thrasher of Jacksonville kicked off his re-election bid for state Senate Tuesday in Jacksonville at a fund-raiser with 2008 -- and probable 2012 -- presidential candidate Mitt Romney. Romneys Free and Strong America PAC endorsed Thrasher on Monday.

Adam Putnam Routs Scott Maddox on Sheriff Endorsements

The score 37-7 sounds like a lopsided football final, but it's actually how many sheriffs backed Adam Putnam over Scott Maddox -- though it may be more like 36-6, since one sheriff apparently wanted to hedge his bets and endorse both of them.

Okaloosa County Seizing Control of Oil Spill Response

Frustrated with attempts to respond to the Deepwater Horizon oil spill, Okaloosa County has voted to give itself the ability to do whatever is needed to protect its beaches and waters, without federal or state approval or approval from British Petroleum. This means the county will need to rely mostly on its own money and is leaving itself open to litigation from federal or state authorities.

Democratic congressional candidate Heather Beavens challenge to veteran U.S. Rep. John Mica is starting to gain some national attention.

Former U.S. Senate Majority Leader Tom Daschle is now backing Beaven, arguing that Mica is vulnerable.

As oil plumes threatened Floridas Panhandle shoreline Monday, the region prepared for a presidential visit in hopes of bolstering oversight and jump-starting cleanup efforts.

President Barack Obama is scheduled to spend the night in Pensacola Monday in preparation for a local tour Tuesday and a national address later Tuesday from the Oval Office in which he is expected to ask BP to set aside billions in cash to pay for future cleanup efforts.

Strong Candidates Vie for Open House Seat in Flagler, Volusia

With Rep. Pat Patterson, R-DeLand, term-limited and running an underdog campaign for the Republican state CFO nomination, a battle is developing to replace him in the 26th District House seat with serious candidates from both parties in the mix.

Four candidates have emerged in the district, which stretches across Flagler and Volusia Counties, west of Daytona Beach. The district includes Lake Helen, Orange City, De Leon Springs and parts of DeLand.
