Tea Party Network Wants Rick Scott to Veto Medicaid, Polytechnic Bills

A coalition of 86 tea party groups around Florida is calling on Gov. Rick Scott to veto four bills passed by the 2012 Legislature, including one authorizing the creation of a freestanding Polytechnic University.

Saying the bills "violate our principles of limited government and fiscal responsibility," the Tea Party Network, in a letter to Scott, targeted:

With public support for Obamacare flat-lining, the president's signature legislation faces round two of a three-day hearing at the U.S. Supreme Court on Tuesday.

A CBS/New York Times poll released Monday showed that just 36 percent of Americans "strongly" or "somewhat" support the law. Other public opinion polls have consistently found a majority opposing the health-care initiative passed by Congress two years ago.

Oral arguments at the high court Monday revolved around an "anti-injunction act" that bars judges from ruling on taxes until those levies have been collected.

House Redistricting Committee Chairman Will Weatherford, R-Wesley Chapel, said Monday the Senates latest redistricting map has significant improvements over the earlier, rejected effort.

The Senate also went through a process of better documenting for the court how they analyzed compactness and the use of political and geographic boundary lines, Weatherford told members of the Redistricting Committee.

GOP 2012 Hopefuls Look to Catch Mitt Romney in Wisconsin

The candidates in the race for the Republican presidential nomination are focusing on Wisconsin this week as Rick Santorum, Ron Paul and Newt Gingrich look to slow Mitt Romney down in the Badger State.

While Maryland and the District of Columbia also hold primaries April 3, Wisconsin is the largest prize of the three with 42 delegates to the Republican convention in Tampa. A Rasmussen Reports poll released at the end of last week found Romney leading there with 46 percent, followed by Santorum with 33 percent, Paul with 8 percent and Gingrich with 7 percent.

Veteran Florida Republican leader Al Cardenas, formerly with the Republican Party of Florida and now the chairman of the American Conservative Union, announced he is backing Romney for the Republican presidential nomination.

Beacon Hill Institute Ranks Florida No. 1 in 'Government, Fiscal Policy'

Florida ranks first among the states in "government and fiscal policy," according to a national survey by the Beacon Hill Institute.

BHI's 11th annual "State Competitiveness Report" compiled a policy index that rates states on their bond rating; workers' compensation premium rates; budget deficit as a percentage of gross state product; average weekly payment to insured unemployed and full-time equivalent staffing in state and local government per 100 residents.
