Beacon Hill Institute Ranks Florida No. 1 in 'Government, Fiscal Policy'
Florida ranks first among the states in "government and fiscal policy," according to a national survey by the Beacon Hill Institute.
BHI's 11th annual "State Competitiveness Report" compiled a policy index that rates states on their bond rating; workers' compensation premium rates; budget deficit as a percentage of gross state product; average weekly payment to insured unemployed and full-time equivalent staffing in state and local government per 100 residents.
Florida's composite score on the index was No. 1 in the country, followed by Delaware and Virginia. Alaska rated worst in the nation.
But the Sunshine State didn't fare so well on other BHI indexes, such as Human Resources (43rd), so Florida's overall ranking came in at 18th.
