New Court Battle Brews over State, Federal Water Rules

Florida's long-running fight about water-quality standards for rivers, lakes and springs could be headed toward a federal appeals court in Atlanta.

Groups on both sides of the fight have given formal notice they could appeal a federal judge's ruling about what are known as "numeric-nutrient criteria" -- an issue that has drawn widespread attention from state policymakers, local governments, business lobbies and environmentalists.

Small Businesses, Lawmakers Push to Repeal 'Killer' Health Insurance Tax

A federal Health Insurance Tax scheduled to kick in by 2014 will cost small businesses $87 billion and "kill jobs," the National Federation of Independent Business says.

In Congress, an effort to repeal the tax is gaining bipartisan steam.

The "HIT" will have "irreversible consequences" on the national economy, according to the NFIB Research Foundation, which predicted the loss of nearly 250,000 U.S. jobs and $30 billion in sales by 2021 due to the tax.

Registration Doubles in Three Days as 'Do Not Call' List Goes Free

Floridians didnt wait long to get on the Do Not Call list once the service was made free.

As of 4 p.m. Wednesday, 82,243 people had registered since Monday when the state Division of Consumer Services announced that the $10 fee for new subscriptions and $5 renewal would be lifted.

The fee for subscription was removed as a result of a measure passed by the Florida Legislature, House Bill 749, sponsored by Rep. Dana Young, R-Tampa, and Sen. Anitere Flores, R-Miami, during the 2012 session.

Trey Radel Shuts 'Domain-gate,' Will Give Up Websites

Accused of being a "cyber-squatter," or worse, GOP congressional candidate Trey Radel on Wednesday began shutting down Web pages that carried the names of three rival candidates in District 19.

Radel's campaign also said it would surrender the rights to some 23 domain names of his opponents.

As first reported by Sunshine State News, personal domain names for Chauncey Goss, Paige Kreegel, Gary Aubuchon and Brian Owens were purchased early last year by the "Friends of Trey Radel," some 11 months before Radel announced his candidacy.

Sanford Commissioner Defends Chief Bill Lee on FOX News

Sanford Commissioner Patty Mahany defended her rejection of the resignation of Police Chief Bill Lee on FOX News on Wednesday.

The commission declined, in a 3-2 vote, to accept Lees permanent resignation on Monday over his handling of the Feb. 26 shooting death of 17-year-old Trayvon Martin by neighborhood watchman George Zimmerman, 28.

Pam Bondi Honors Seven for Victims' Rights Work

Attorney General Pam Bondi, along with Gov. Rick Scott and Agriculture Commissioner Adam Putnam, recognized four law enforcement officers and three advocates to commemorate National Crime Victims Rights Week in a ceremony Wednesday in the Cabinet meeting room in the Capitol.

John Alter Appointed by Rick Scott to Northwest Florida Water District

Gov. Rick Scott appointed John W. Alter to the Apalachicola-Chipola-Lower Chattahoochee River Basin seat on the governing board of the Northwest Florida Water Management District.

Alter, 75, of Malone, is a retired public relations executive and manages Alter-Bevis Farms, which was designated as a Florida Stewardship Forest in 2000, according to the governors office.
