Is Sen. Thad Altman Now Looking at Major GOP Primary Opposition?

Sen. Thad Altman of Melbourne -- described by some among the GOP faithful as "a moderate Republican" -- could be facing major challenges from members of his own party as he prepares to run for a second term.

First elected in 2008, Altmans district (SD 24) currently includes parts of Brevard,? ?Orange and Seminole counties. The new district, SD 16, passed by the Senate and approved by the Florida Supreme Court on Friday, contains parts of Brevard and Indian River counties.

Rick Scott: Drug Testing Order about Government Accountability


Gov. Rick Scott continued Friday to defend his 2011 executive order to require random drug testing of state employees that was declared unconstitutional by a federal judge.

If you talk to the typical person that has a job in our state outside government, theyve been drug screened, Scott said during a morning interview of WCOA 1370 AM in Pensacola.

Rick Scott: 'Comfortable' with Medicaid Law Opposed by Counties

Gov. Rick Scott said he understands the concerns of the 47 counties that teamed to file a lawsuit Thursday challenging the new state Medicaid law that requires them to pay 85 percent of what the state claims are years of unpaid bills.

But he wouldnt say hed put a freeze on the law as the court process plays out, when asked during an interview Friday morning on WCOA 1370 AM in Pensacola.

Rick Scott, Jennifer Carroll to sign 'Deputy Mecklenburg Act'

Gov. Rick Scott and Lt. Gov. Jennifer Carroll will visit the Hernando County Sheriffs Office on Friday for a ceremonial signing ofa bill named after a 22-year veteran deputy who was killed last July in a high-speed chase.

House Bill 667, the "Deputy John C. Mecklenburg Act," increases the penalties against a suspect if a law enforcement officer or bystander is killed while a suspect of a crime is fleeing or eluding law enforcement officers.

47 Counties Challenge Medicaid Funding Law

Arguing they are being hit with an "unfunded mandate," 47 counties filed a lawsuit Thursday that challenges the constitutionality of a new state Medicaid law that could cost them hundreds of millions of dollars.

The local governments, joined by the Florida Association of Counties, indicated they will seek an injunction to try to quickly block parts of the law. The association announced earlier this month that it would file the lawsuit in Leon County circuit court.

Senate Minority Leader Nan Rich Files to Challenge Rick Scott

Less than a week after Florida Sen. Nan Rich reasserted plans to challenge for Gov. Rick Scotts job in 2014, the Weston Democrat has opened a campaign account that will allow her to begin collecting money for the campaign.

Rich, 70, the Senate Democratic leader, opened her account with the State Division of Elections on Monday.

Mike Fasano Calls for Removal of USF Poly Chancellor

Florida Sen. Mike Fasano, R-New Port Richey, is calling for Marshall Goodman to be permanently removed as University of South Florida Polytechnics regional chancellor.

The call by Fasano, who has opposed the school becoming an independent state university, comes after an internal investigation found problems involving leases, purchases and financial statements at the school in Lakeland, according to the Lakeland Ledger.
