Newt Gingrich Finishing Campaign on 'Drunken Sailor' Spending Spree

As Newt Gingrich prepares to wave the white flag of surrender, at least one campaign staffer confirms the former speaker of the House "spent like a drunken sailor" during the last two months of his presidential campaign -- even outspending Republican front-runner Mitt Romney.

"Ever since the beginning of March the speaker hasn't seemed bothered by how much it cost us to travel around, as long as we were making a statement," said the longtime campaign aide on Monday. "He likes to make a splash."

Florida Sen. Chris Smith, D-Fort Lauderdale, couldnt wait for the state to convene its own task force following the shooting death of Trayvon Martin in Sanford.

So he put his own together.

And while he is among the 19 individuals placed on Gov. Rick Scotts Citizens Safety and Protection Task Force, which has its first meeting on Tuesday, he has released the findings of his own group.

Florida Redistricting Plans Cleared by U.S. Department of Justice

The United States Department of Justice has granted Floridas request for administrative preclearance of the state Senate, House and congressional redistricting plans under Section 5 of the Voting Rights Act.

The announcement that the redistricting efforts for the three maps are in compliance with the federal Voting Rights Act in Collier, Hardee, Hendry, Hillsborough and Monroe counties means local election officials statewide can begin implementing the redrawn and new districts for the 2012 elections.

Adam Putnam to Bring Ag Reading into the Classroom

Agriculture Commissioner Adam Putnam will kick off Florida Agriculture Literacy Day on Tuesday morning by reading to second graders at Dunbar Elementary Magnet School in Tampa.

More than 1,000 volunteers from across Florida will read from "Healthy Florida Farms," written by Arlette Roberge and illustrated by Rick Joggerst, to an estimated 54,000 elementary class students.

Pump Prices Fall in Florida as Demand Drops for Gas

A drop in the global demand for fuel has helped the price dip to a price that motorists havent seen since 2011, according to AAA.

Floridians began the week paying an average of $3.80 for a gallon of regular gas on Monday, down 8 cents on average from a week earlier, 13 cents less than a month ago, according to AAA.

"Since the start of the year, 2012 broke daily, weekly and monthly records for the highest price averages at the pump, but now the tables have turned and prices are below last year's level," Jessica Brady, AAA spokeswoman, stated in a release.

Rick Scott Vetoes Shift of Visitor-Tax Dollars from KSC to FIT

A wide-ranging bill that included shifting tax dollars generated by visitors to Kennedy Space Center and Cape Canaveral Air Force Station to Florida Institute of Technology was vetoed by Gov. Rick Scott on Friday.

Scott wrote that while he supported the majority of the bill, House Bill 7099, he disagreed with the Legislature's decision to send $5 million a year in sales tax revenue from the space center visitors to the Melbourne-based FIT.
