The Florida Bar: Six Disbarred, 13 Suspended

The Florida Supreme Court has disciplined 21 attorneys, with six disbarred and 13 suspended, the Florida Bar announced.

Some attorneys received more than one discipline.

One attorney's license was placed on probation, four received public reprimands and one was ordered to pay restitution.

Marco Rubio Stands Up for Chinese Activist Chen Guangcheng

From his perch on the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, U.S. Sen. Marco Rubio, R-Fla., whose name continues to garner buzz about ending up as Mitt Romneys running mate, went to bat for Chen Guangcheng, the Chinese activist who opposed that nations one child policy. In April, Guangcheng escaped house arrest and reportedly made his way to the U.S. embassy.

Citizens Closes Record $750 Million Reinsurance Transfer

On Tuesday, Citizens Property Insurance, which has made it a goal to reduce exposure and reliance on assessments, announced closing on a $750 million, two-year collateralized reinsurance transfer using catastrophe bonds issued by Everglades Re Ltd.

The transaction was given a "B+" rating by Standard & Poors, as the notes cover losses from Florida hurricanes on a per-occurrence basis, with the cover coming for Citizens coastal accounts.

John McCain Backs Ozzie deFaria to Take on Debbie Wasserman Schultz

On Tuesday, U.S. Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., the Republican presidential candidate who lost out to Barack Obama in the 2008 presidential election, announced that he was backing Ozzie deFaria to challenge U.S. Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz, D-Fla., best known nationally for being the chairwoman of the Democratic National Committee.

Gov. Rick Scott to Meet with Sun-Sentinel Editorial Board

Gov. Rick Scott, who has made it a point to visit each daily newspaper in the state, is scheduled to sit down with the Sun-Sentinel editorial board Tuesday afternoon.

A one-hour block of time has been set for Scott starting at 3 p.m. in the newspapers Fort Lauderdale headquarters.

Florida Bar Out to Educate Voters on Judicial Merit Retention

The Florida Bar kicked off a $300,000 campaign in Tallahassee Monday to educate voters about the merit retention system.

The idea is to help Floridians this November make an informed choice as to whether three Florida Supreme Court justices and 15 appellate judges should keep their jobs.

A new survey shows 90 percent of the citizens of this state dont understand merit retention and have no idea how it works.

Florida voters amended the Constitution in 1976 to try to keep politics out of the judicial system.

After months of legal battling about whether it spent enough money on patient care, a Medicaid mental-health plan will not have to pay back about $4 million to the state, according to a settlement agreement.

Florida Health Partners Inc., which provides mental-health services to Medicaid beneficiaries in a large part of Central Florida, filed administrative challenges last year after the state Agency for Health Care Administration said the plan had not complied in 2006 with what is known as a "medical loss ratio."

Supervisors OK'd to Use New Maps as Feds Uphold Congressional Lines

A Leon County judge rejected a move to block the Legislatures new congressional lines on Monday as the U.S. Department of Justice cleared the new map under the federal Voting Rights Act.
