Convicted lobbyist Jack Abramoff on Thursday told the Capital Tiger Bay Club that he's now trying to reform the political process, via a book and a speaking tour that reveal previously unknown secrets of the inside-the-Beltway culture.

And in a room full of people who have made their living in the political process he admits to abusing, Abramoff also apologized for his role in making it more corrupt.

Latvala, Oelrich, Norman Are In as Qualifying Reaches Final Day

A trio of mini-sagas has been concluded as state senators Jack Latvala, R-Clearwater, Steve Oelrich, R-Gainesville, and Jim Norman, R-Tampa, all filed their qualifying paperwork.

Friday is the final day for candidates to qualify, with paperwork due by noon with the state Division of Elections.

Flling for legislative office should be allowed on the local level. I think only filing in Tallahassee is sponsored by FedEx, Sen. Chris Smith, D-Fort Lauderdale, joked on Twitter before qualifying on Thursday.

Florida to DOJ: We’re Waiting

Now Florida is the aggressor, having turned the waiting-game tables on the Department of Justice.

Having imposed their own deadline for the DOJ, Florida officials are watching the clock.

With court battles anticipated, the state continues to wait for answers to questions on the legality of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security having for months kept the state from accessing a database requested to help check the voter rolls for noncitizens.

Sen. Jim Norman Files Qualifying Paperwork

Despite word that efforts were underway to keep him from running, Sen. Jim Norman, R-Tampa, has qualified to run.

Norman joins what is expected to be an expensive primary battle against House Speaker Pro Tempore John Legg, R-Port Richey.

Legg entered the second quarter of the year with more than $120,000 in the bank.

Norman, who has raised $177,820 since the start of 2011, had a little more than $104,000 on hand as the second quarter began.

Cost of Common Core: Boon or Boondoggle for Schools?

Florida's implementation of "Common Core standards" for math and English Language Arts could cost taxpayers as much as $780 million -- could, but shouldn't, says a national education think tank.

As a follow-on to No Child Left Behind, the "Common Core" is the latest effort to lift educational standards by aligning K-12 curricula across America. A total of 45 states, including Florida, have signed on.

Coalition Opposed to ‘Stand Your Ground’ to Rally Task Force

A coalition that includes New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg, the NAACP, the National Urban League and the parents of Trayvon Martin plan to hold a rally as the task force onStand Your Ground law meets in Longwood on Tuesday.

The Second Chance on Shoot First campaign coalition plans to deliver a petition with 340,000 names asking the governors Task Force on Citizen Safety and Protection to reform or repeal the Stand Your Ground law.

PPP Poll: Connie Mack Routing GOP Primary Foes

A poll from Public Policy Polling (PPP), a firm with connections to prominent Democrats, released on Thursday, shows U.S. Rep. Connie Mack with a solid lead over his rivals -- former U.S. Sen. George LeMieux, former U.S. Rep. Dave Weldon and businessman and retired Army officer Mike McCalister -- for the Republican nomination to challenge Democrat incumbent U.S. Sen. Bill Nelson. Unlike other polls, the survey shows Nelson beating Mack and LeMieux by 13 percent and McCalister and Weldon by 14 percent.

While other polls have shown that U.S. Rep. Connie Mack, the front-runner in the Republican primary for U.S. Senate, is running close with Bill Nelson, a poll from Public Policy Polling (PPP), a firm with connections to prominent Democrats, shows the Democrat incumbent with a solid lead.
