Rick Scott to Sign Bill Barring Florida Banks from Handling Iranian Arms Dealers' Cash


Gov. Rick Scott will be at the Jewish Federation of South Palm Beach County Zinman Hall in Boca Raton, according to his office, where he will sign a bill aimed at keeping Iranian arms dealers from laundering money through banks chartered in Florida.

Rick Scott Signs Cyberstalking, Sex Predator Bills

Gov. Rick Scott signed four bills in a ceremony at the Lee County sheriffs office on Friday that expands protection of victims of sexual and domestic violence.

We are fortunate that Florida has experienced a 41-year low crime rate, but we must continue to provide our law enforcement officers with the tools they need to keep our communities safe, Scott stated in a release.

This legislation will protect the rights of individuals affected by crime and help make Florida a safer place.

Pam Bondi: Odessa Women Charged in Real Estate Scam

The state attorneys office reported a 39-year-old Central Florida woman was arrested as part of a real estate scam that crossed at least three counties and took four Floridians for at least $700,000 over two years.

Renee Manning, of Odessa, was charged with one count of organized scheme to defraud by the Florida Department of Law Enforcement Tampa Regional Operations Center, Office of Statewide Prosecution, and the Pasco County sheriffs office, Attorney General Pam Bondis office announced on Friday.

UF President Bernie Machen to Retire Next Year

Bernie Machen, University of Florida president, on Friday announced he plans to retire next year, though he said he wants to remain at the university as a professor.

Machen, who became president in early 2004, said at the university's board of trustees meeting that he will remain at the helm until the board completes a search for his successor. Trustees chairman David Brown said that search would start this summer, with a goal of finding a successor before the end of 2013.

Machen's contract would have been up at the end of 2013.

Debate Over James Ammons Underscores FAMU Tensions

During a brief break in a meeting last week of the Florida A&M University board of trustees, President James Ammons was weighing his options.

Several trustees had spoken in support of a motion of no-confidence offered against Ammons for his seeming lack of leadership as the university has dealt with one problem after another, including the hazing death of a drum major in its iconic Marching 100 band. The board would shortly vote on the motion, which ended up passing 8-4.
