Mitt Romney's Team Calls on Anitere Flores After NALEO Speech

After Mitt Romney, the presumptive Republican presidential candidate, offered an address in Orlando to the National Association of Latino Elected and Appointed Officials (NALEO) hammering President Barack Obama on the economy and immigration, his team called on a Republican state legislator to go bat for them.

State Sen. Anitere Flores, R-Miami, praised Romney after the speech and ripped into Obama on Thursday.

National Conservative Leader Backs Dave Weldon for Senate

On Thursday, David Barton, an evangelical leader and conservative activist who has been very active on fighting for an increased role for religion in the public square, announced that he was backing former U.S. Rep. Dave Weldon for the Republican nomination to challenge Democrat incumbent U.S. Sen. Bill Nelson.

Courts to Ditch Paper and Go Electronic

In courthouses across Florida, shelves are lined with bulging files of legal documents.

But changes released Thursday by the Florida Supreme Court may lead to paper court files going the way of phone books and faxes in the increasingly e-world.

Justices unanimously approved rule changes that will require almost all court documents to be filed electronically. The changes, which have been extensively studied by Florida Bar rules committees and other groups, will gradually take effect by the end of 2013.

Rick Scott Roundly Unhappy With University Tuition Hikes

Gov. Rick Scott must have gotten a surprise Thursday. Though he didn't say if he would step in tounilaterally take corrective action, he at least let it be known that hes disappointed.

A day after Scott said he would be surprised if the 17-member state Board of Governors, of which the governor appoints 14, would approve significant tuition hikes for the states 11 universities, four were given the maximum increase allowed.

The four are Florida Atlantic University, Florida International University, University of Central Florida and New College.

UF Tuition Up 9 Percent, USF Going Up 11 Percent

After rejecting tuition hikes of 15 percent, 9 percent, 13.5 percent and 12 percent for the University of Central Florida, the State University System Board of Governors took a five-minute break on Thursday before agreeing to give the University of Florida its 9 percent requested tuition increase and the University of South Florida an 11 percent increase to tuition.

The tuition hikes are the first of 11 that the Board of Governors is expected to approve this afternoon.
