Bill Nelson and Connie Mack in Tight Battle While Rick Scott Still Struggles

A poll of Florida voters unveiled Wednesday shows that incumbent U.S. Sen. Bill Nelson is in for a tough fight as he seeks his third term, while Gov. Rick Scott remains upside down in the Sunshine State.

The Quinnipiac poll finds Democrat Nelson taking 41 percent while U.S. Rep. Connie Mack, the favorite to win the Republican primary in August, is right behind him with 40 percent. A Q-poll released last week showed Nelson with a larger lead, taking 43 percent, while Mack followed with 39 percent.

After Immigration Decision, Obama Leads Romney in Q-Poll of Florida and Battleground States

Quinnipiac University released polls of three crucial battleground states on Wednesday -- Florida, Ohio and Pennsylvania -- showing President Barack Obama leading Mitt Romney by single digits, and the Democrat incumbent scoring points in the Sunshine State with his new immigration policy.

The polls show Florida to be the closest state, with Obama taking 45 percent and Romney right behind with 41 percent. Obama also gets 45 percent in Ohio while 39 percent back Romney. In Ohio, Obama takes 47 percent with Romney trailing with 38 percent.

Student Prayer, PIP Reform, Adam Putnam's Energy Bill Among New Laws on Sunday

Students giving inspirational messages at public school events, revamped auto insurance rules, a new statewide energy plan, advertising on state trails, student-athletes being able to transfer to more competitive programs and a new state symbol all become law on Sunday.

In addition to the states $70 billion budget -- including a $1 billion boost to public education -- for the 2012-2013 fiscal year kicking into effect, more than 100 new laws and regulation repeals will hit the books, or be removed, as of July 1.

Host Committee Plans Media, Delegate Mixer to Open GOP National Convention

The Republican National Convention in Tampa will kick off with an invitation-only, cocktail-style reception for 20,000 that will feature local talent and designs tailored to highlight Pinellas and Hillsborough counties.

The Host Committee announced that the Aug. 26 event will mark the first time delegates and the media will be jointly welcomed at a convention.

Rick Scott Signs Newborn Task Force, Synthetic Drug Ban Bills

Gov. Rick Scott held a ceremonial signing for a pair of bills championed by Attorney General Pam Bondi.

House Bill 227 outlaws more than 90 new forms of synthetic drugs and House Bill 1175 creates a 10-member statewide task force -- with Bondi as chairwoman -- that would examine the emerging problem of neonatal withdrawal syndrome as it pertains to prescription drugs.

'Stand Your Ground' Task Force on the Road to Arcadia

The task force created to review the states Stand Your Ground law will hold its next meeting in the Central Florida community of Arcadia on July 10, the governors office announced.

The Task Force on Citizen Safety and Protection will meet at 9 a.m. at DeSoto Middle School, 420 East Gibson St., Arcadia.

In the first place, how does the governor's ethically challenged, $189,000-a-year chief of staff get to stick around this long after he was fi... uh, after he resigned in May? I can't recall where any of the state employees MacNamara dispatched with a pink slip over the years were allowed to stay on as long after the hatchet as he has.

Judge to Hear Voter Purge Arguments

A federal judge who struck down part of a controversial state elections law will hold a hearing Wednesday morning on whether to issue a temporary restraining order in a separate case concerning a state-ordered voter purge.

The U.S. Department of Justice has asked U.S. District Judge Robert Hinkle to bar elections officials from removing any suspected noncitizens from the rolls by using an inaccurate state database at the center of the effort. The state argues that no voters are currently in danger of being pushed off and that the courts should wait to rule on the case.

Miami Heat Creates Teamwork among South Florida Delegation

The Miami Heats NBA Championship victory has created some bipartisanship in Congress.

On Tuesday, U.S. Reps. Ileana Ros-Lehtinen, R-Miami, and Alcee Hastings, D-Miramar, introduced a resolution congratulating the Heat on the 2012 title.

Adding their names as co-sponsors were Reps. Ted Deutch, D-Boca Raton; Mario Diaz-Balart, R-Miami; David Rivera, R-Miami; Debbie Wasserman Schultz, D-Weston; Allen B. West, R-Plantation; and Frederica S. Wilson, D-Miami Gardens.
