Rick Scott Heads Off to Jacksonville to Ink the Nation’s Newest Spaceport

Rick Scott to ceremonially ink the nations newest spaceport. Gov. Rick Scott will hold a ceremonial bill-signing on Saturday designating Cecil Field as the nations eighth spaceport.

Cecil Field was designated a spaceport by the federal government in 2010. The designation allows launch vehicles to make horizontal takeoffs and landings on site.

The state bill, HB 59, offers companies involved in spaceport activities at Cecil Field the chance of tax exemptions on equipment purchases.

Hall of Famer to Lead Agency for Persons with Disabilities


Florida Womens Hall of Fame member Barbara Palmer, the chief of staff at the Agency for Persons with Disabilities, has been moved into the position of director for the state agency by Gov. Rick Scott.

Palmer will replace Mike Hansen, who has accepted a position with the Florida Senate.

HD 5: Despite GOP Primary, Marti Coley in Good Shape to Head Back to Tallahassee

As she seeks to win a fourth full term in the Florida House of Representatives, Rep. Marti Coley, R-Marianna, is a heavy favorite to head back to Tallahassee despite opposition in the Republican primary in HD 5 on Aug. 14.

First elected to the House in a special election in 2005, Coley currently represents all of Calhoun and Liberty counties and parts of Bay, Gadsden, Jackson, Leon, Okaloosa, Wakulla and Walton counties. After the redistricting process, Coley is running to represent all of Holmes, Jackson, Walton and Washington counties and parts of Bay County.

HD 2: Clay Ford a Heavy Favorite Over Republican Primary Challenger

Rep. Clay Ford, R-Pensacola, faces a challenger in the Republican HD 2 primary on Aug. 14 as he seeks another term in the Florida House of Representatives representing parts of the Panhandle.

Ford currently represents parts of Escambia and Santa Rosa counties and, while the Legislature tackled redistricting earlier in the year, his new district covers parts of the same two counties.

Jeff Atwater’s Office to Host Scam Prevention Workshops for Seniors

Florida Chief Financial Officer Jeff Atwater intends to hold a series of workshop across the state to highlight ways seniors can avoid scams.

The free morning workshops, called Golden Rules for Your Golden Years, will feature information on annuities, reverse mortgages, long-term care insurance and identity theft; explain key terms; outline important questions to ask; and provide educational videos of how some common insurance and financial products work.

The state is waiting for a response from BP after Attorney General Pam Bondiinformed the energy giant that Floridians are not being offered a fair share of the pending settlement out of the 2010 spill.

In a letter to John Lynch Jr., the U.S. general counsel for BP America Inc., Bondi expressed concerns this past week that individuals and businesses in Florida are not being equally considered for compensation as with their counterparts in other Gulf Coast states.
