Cattlemen, Farmers Dominate Updated Soil and Water Advisory Council

Three cattlemen and three farmers were among Commissioner of Agriculture Adam Putnams seven appointments Monday to help guide Floridas new streamlined Soil and Water Conservation Council.

The council is expected to provide input to the state department on legal matters relating to statewide soil and water conservation.

In a release, Putman stated that the council will also allow for a more focused advisory body that is better suited to provide guidance relating to soil and water conservation issues throughout Florida.

League of Cities Attorney Scores Municipal Association's Top Yearly Honor

Chip Morrison, general counsel for the Florida League of Cities, was named the municipal attorney of the year by Florida Municipal Attorneys Association.

Chip has given tirelessly and unselfishly to Floridas municipal community, Don Smallwood, city attorney of Kissimmee and president of the FMAA, stated in a release. He has practiced municipal law with an integrity and humbleness that brings respect and admiration to the profession.

Flags Ordered to Half-Staff for Brian D. Hornsby

Gov. Rick Scott has ordered state and national flags at half-staff Tuesday outside the Brevard County Courthouse, Melbourne City Hall and the Florida Capitol for Chief Warrant Officer Brian D. Hornsby of Melbourne.

Hornsby, a highly decorated U.S. Army pilot, died in a UH-60 Black Hawk helicopter crash northeast of Kandahar in August.

Circuit Judge Narrows Jeff Clemens's Lead over Mack Bernard; Bernard to Appeal

Judge Terry Lewis of the2nd Judicial Circuit Court of Florida this morning narrowed the lead of Rep.Jeff Clemens of Lake Worth over Democratic primary rival Mack Bernard of West Palm Beach, adding nine uncounted provisional ballots to the latter's total, thereby reducing Clemens' lead to just eight votes.

Florida Ag Inspector Nets 200 Pounds of Pot in ‘Empty’ Truck

A Miami trucker, Ezrah Morrison, was arrested over the weekend for transporting more than 200 pounds of marijuana in Columbia County, the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services announced.

Rick Scott Announces Community Grants Tied to Military Bases


Military bases in Florida will bring $850,000 in Defense Reinvestment Grants to 11 surrounding communities, Gov. Rick Scott announced Monday.

The round of grants for 2012-2013, administered by Enterprise Florida, supports base retention and economic efforts in the community.
