Chairman of FAMU Trustees Seeks Tighter Control of President

Little more than a year into her job, Florida A&M University President Elmira Mangum on Tuesday faced criticism from some of the university's trustees as they evaluated her performance.

A presidential evaluation-committee meeting was tense, reflecting the gap between Mangum's belief that she should have day-to-day control of the university and board chairman Rufus Montgomery's move to place her on a "performance improvement plan."

John Mica Urges Pentagon to Arm Military Personnel After Chattanooga Shootings

In the aftermath of a jihadist gunman targeting a recruiting station and a reserve center, killing four Marines and a Navy officer last week in Chattanooga, a Florida congressman is taking the lead to get the Obama administration to bolster security for armed forces members. 

At the end of last week, U.S. Rep. John Mica, R-Fla., led efforts in Congress to urge U.S. Defense Secretary Ashton Carter to allow military personnel to arm themselves when at recruiting stations and other domestic posts.

The Cuban embassy reopened on Monday for the first time in more than 50 years in Washington, D.C., while the U.S. opened the doors to its embassy in Havana -- latest step in President Barack Obama’s efforts to normalize relations with the communist nation. Gov. Rick Scott said he continued to oppose those efforts and accused Obama of appeasing the Castro regime.
