Two Florida congressmen are running neck and neck in the Democratic primary to replace U.S Sen. Marco Rubio, R-Fla., in 2016, a new poll shows.

On Monday, Mason-Dixon released a poll which finds U.S. Rep. Alan Grayson, D-Fla., ahead of U.S. Rep. Patrick Murphy, D-Fla., by a whisker in the primary: 33 percent to 32 percent. But a plurality of those surveyed -- 35 percent -- remain undecided.

A new poll shows a wide open Republican primary to replace U.S. Sen. Marco Rubio, R-Fla., in 2016. Rubio is running for the Republican presidential nomination and has said he will not seek a second term in the Senate.

Mason-Dixon released a survey on Monday showing almost half of Florida Republicans -- 45 percent -- remain undecided on who they will back in the Senate primary.

Before We Lose Our Minds

July 27, 2015 - 7:00am

Current quibbling over what Jeb Bush meant when he said it's time to phase out and replace Medicare -- as opposed to "attacking the seniors," as one woman at a recent event bellowed out -- will soon seem quaint against the realities of our future.

During his two terms in Congress, Patrick Murphy built up the reputation as a moderate who would work both sides of the aisle for his district. But now that he's running for the Democratic Senate nomination and needs the approval of party-first-district-second, Murphy is starting to bolt to the left.

The former mayor of Pahokee has filed a complaint with the Internal Revenue Service against the litigation arm of perhaps the largest environmental group on Florida's Treasure Coast.

James "J.P." Sasser claims the Stuart-based Rivers Coalition Defense Fund, organized as a 501(c)3 corporation, has violated seven of the nine criteria for maintaining its tax-exempt status. He believes the corporation's officials should answer for what he calls "a deceptive and nontransparent fundraising scheme."

Rejected Medical Pot Applications Likely to Be Challenged

July 25, 2015 - 10:15pm

Even before selecting five nurseries to become Florida's first legal pot producers, Department of Health officials will face a challenge from at least one grower whose application was tossed out because it was late.

The department's Office of Compassionate Use staff rejected two of the 30 applications from nurseries hoping to get chosen as one of the five coveted "dispensing organizations." Both were tossed because they were received after a 5 p.m. deadline following a frenzied scene during a torrential downpour July 8 at the agency's headquarters.

Cats Rock Famous Donald Trump Hairdo on Instagram

Republican primary nominee Donald Trump has been polling fairly well among Republicans, but he's not just popular among his own party -- he's also pretty hot with cats.

Or, his hair is.

An account on Instagram, @trumpyourcat, requests for cat owners to simply brush out their feline friends, put the hair they brushed into a toupee a la Donald Trump and tag the photo #trumpyourcat. The account will then repost the photo, often juxtaposed next to a photo of Trump with a similar hair style.

Weekly Roundup: Battle Lines and Power Lines

July 24, 2015 - 10:00pm

In case you were wondering, the 2016 general election is still more than 15 months away.

But with new congressional districts about to be crafted by lawmakers and a Republican presidential primary campaign already in full swing, the off-season ain't what it used to be. Once and potentially future congressmen are already plotting their comebacks depending on what Florida's next political map looks like. And a former governor of the state stopped in Tallahassee to vow to take on the lobbying corps in a different capital city: Washington, D.C.

Medical Marijuana Growing More Welcome Among Washington Republicans

Washington Republicans may be loosening up on medical marijuana. One congressman, a medical doctor, is cosponsoring a measure in the House that would make it easier for researchers to study medical uses of the plant.

And House leaders are "very interested" in the research, according to The Hill newspaper.

Maryland Republican Andy Harris, a medical doctor opposed to recreational pot use, and Oregon Democrat Earl Blumenauer intend to introduce their bill to ease restrictions on medical studies of the drug.
