Regulators Asked to Reject FPL Nuclear Request

Florida Power & Light received pushback Tuesday from South Florida officials and other critics as it requested $34.2 million from customers to continue planning a pair of nuclear reactors at its Turkey Point complex in Miami-Dade County.

The request, if approved by the Florida Public Service Commission in October, would place the cost for new nuclear power at 34 cents on a typical residential customer's monthly bill in 2016.

Greg Steube, R-Sarasota, has resurrected a bill allowing college students with concealed weapons permits to carry firearms on campus. Just a few short months ago, legislation to allow guns on college campuses was close to becoming a reality.

The Florida House stepped closer to finalizing a new set of maps for Florida’s congressional districts on Tuesday, but the passage of a bill approving a set of base maps wasn’t met without criticism from several lawmakers who blasted both the Florida Supreme Court as well as the entire redistricting special session.

David Jolly Wants Congress to Investigate HUD's Handling of Families Making Too Much for Public Housing

U.S. Rep. David Jolly, R-Fla., who is running to replace U.S. Sen. Marco Rubio, R-Fla., in the U.S. Senate in 2016 is wanting an investigation into the U.S. Housing and Urban Development (HUD) Department in light of last month’s report that tens of thousands of Americans were living in public housing despite exceeding the maximum earning level required to live there. 

“With an ever-growing waitlist for housing assistance from those truly in need, these incidences of waste, fraud and abuse must be eliminated immediately,” Jolly said. “It is time to clean house at HUD.”

Florida Farm Bureau Honors State Legislators

The Florida Farm Bureau announced its Legislators of the Year and Champions for Agriculture awards even as the Florida Legislature continues to hold a special session in Tallahassee this week. On Tuesday, the Farm Bureau named state Sen. Kelli Stargel, R-Lakeland, and state Rep. Katie Edwards, D-Sunrise, as Legislators of the Year. The group also recognized Florida House Speaker Steve Crisafulli, R-Merritt Island, for his work on agriculture issues. Both Crisafulli and Edwards have garnered buzz as potential candidates for higher office, including state agriculture commissioner.

Rebecca Negron Reels in More Endorsements for Congressional Bid

Martin County School Board Member Rebecca Negron reeled in more endorsements on Tuesday as she continues her effort in the crowded Republican primary to replace U.S. Rep. Patrick Murphy, D-Fla., in Congress. Murphy is running for the U.S. Senate in 2016
