Tallahassee's 'Good Old Days' Mostly Good for Good Ol' Boys

August 23, 2015 - 11:15pm

Before any more state capital folks take a misty-eyed stroll down memory lane, let's get one thing straight.

Term limits happened in Florida for a reason.

Florida politics got a whole lot more interesting last week as the Legislature ended a special session without agreeing on new congressional districts. The next few days should offer some clarity on where things go from here. Rick Scott could call a special session and have the Legislature try again. The Florida Supreme Court, which ruled against the old districts and mandated the special session, could wind up creating the new districts.

It looks to be game over -- at least for now -- for the Florida Legislature, which couldn’t reach an agreement on a set of redrawn congressional maps during the August special session.

Unemployment Drops to 5.4 Percent in Florida

August 21, 2015 - 11:30am

Gov. Rick Scott announced in Naples on Friday that the unemployment rate in Florida dropped to 5.4 percent as almost 17,000 new jobs were created in the month. In June, the unemployment rate was 5.5 percent, the lowest it had been since March 2008.
