McBurney had around $60,000 in the bank while Republican primary opponent Luis Melendez brought in less than $2,500 the entire campaign -- and spent almost every penny of it. House Seats 11-15: Incumbents Have it Easy in This Part of Florida

August 13, 2010 - 6:00pm

House Seat 11: A host of Republicans have come out to challenge Rep. Debbie Boyd, D-Newberry, who represents all of Gilchrist, Lafayette and Suwannee counties and parts of Alachua, Columbia and Dixie counties. The Republican candidates are having difficulty raising money -- which will be a problem for the general election. Lake City businesswoman Elizabeth Porter has the backing of Speaker Larry Cretul, R-Ocala, but had around $7,000 in the bank at the end of July. Paul Watson, who has the backing of Florida Right-to-Life and Rep.

August 13, 2010 - 6:00pm

House Seat 1: With Rep. Greg Evers, R-Baker, running for the Senate, four candidates have jumped in the Republican primary for his seat, representing parts of Escambia, Okaloosa and Santa Rosa counties. Helped by loaning his campaign $50,000, Doug Broxson has spent more than $157,000 and had around $25,000 left at the end of June. Greg Brown had around $20,000 left to challenge Broxson. Two other candidates, Ricky Perritt and Ferd Salomon, will be hard-pressed to catch up to Broxson and Brown. The winner of the Republican primary takes on independent Mathias Venditto in November. There is no Democratic candidate in the race.

All 120 seats in the Florida House of Representatives will be up for grabs come November. With Republicans controlling 76 seats, it will take a near miracle for the Democrats to gain control of the House this election cycle.

Bad news may be coming for Democrats in the November elections -- and that dismal prediction comes from a Democratic pollster.

Two Florida Housing Markets Buck Price Trend -- They're Up!

While home prices continue to slide statewide, two regions posted gains in the second quarter.

Palm Bay-Melbourne-Titusville median home prices were up 12.7 percent while Cape Coral-Fort Myers climbed 12 percent. Those were the eighth and 10th biggest increases nationwide.

The Florida Association of Realtors was not available to comment on the year-to-year gains, but the National Association of Realtors speculated that median prices rose because more buyers were steering clear of foreclosure fire sales.
