House Seats 6-10: All Eyes on Hotly Contested Battle for House Seat 9

August 13, 2010 - 6:00pm

House Seat 6: With around $80,000 in the bank, Rep. Jimmy Patronis, R-Panama City, who represents Gulf County and parts of Bay and Franklin counties, should be set for another term. Democratic opponent John McDonald had less than $2,000 in the bank at the end of July.

House Seat 7: Rep. Marti Coley, R-Marianna,represents Calhoun and Liberty County as well as parts of Bay, Gadsden, Jackson, Leon, Okaloosa, Wakulla and Walton counties. With more than $100,000 in the bank, Coley is a favorite in November against Democratic challenger attorney David Pleat. Pleat is an attractive candidate but he has already burned through almost all of the more than $31,000 he has raised. If Pleat can raise money, keep an eye on him, but until then Coley has to be considered a solid favorite.

House Seat 8: Rep. Alan Williams, D-Tallahassee, will have two more years to represent parts of Gadsden and Leon counties. He is the only candidate in the race.

House Seat 9: Having won by the skin of her teeth in 2008, Rep. Michelle Rehwinkel Vasilinda, D-Tallahassee, faces serious challenges in the primary and in the general election to hold on to this seat which represents parts of Gadsden, Jefferson and Leon counties. While Rehwinkel Vasilinda had more than $45,000 in the bank at the end of July, she has been facing an aggressive challenge from former Leon County Democratic Chairman Rick Minor who has hammered her for backing oil drilling in Florida waters. Minor had around $20,000 at the end of July. Sensing an opportunity to pick up a seat from the Democrats, the Republican Party of Florida is delighted that businesswoman Kirk Headley-Perdue is in the race, with more than $45,000 on hand at the end of June. With $6,000 in the bank, conservative activist Ann Yarko, who has worked hard cultivating the grass-roots all throughout 2010, is standing in Headley-Perdues path for the Republican nomination. This district bears watching in the primary and general elections.

House Seat 10: Rep. Leonard Bembry, D-Madison, appears set for another term, representing all of Hamilton, Madison and Taylor counties and parts of Alachua, Columbia, Dixie, Franklin, Jefferson, Levy and Wakulla counties. Bembry had more than $45,000 on hand at the end of July while Republican opponent David Feigin had a little more than $1,000 in the bank.
