House Seats 16-20: Republicans Cruising on the First Coast

August 13, 2010 - 6:00pm

House Seat 16: Representing parts of Duval County, Rep. Charles McBurney, R-Jacksonville, appears headed for another term. McBurney had around $60,000 in the bank while Republican primary opponent Luis Melendez brought in less than $2,500 the entire campaign -- and spent almost every penny of it. The winner of the primary will take on environmentalist and independent candidate Dave Baldwin in the general election. There is no Democrat in the race.

House Seat 17: Rep. Lake Ray, R-Jacksonville, looks headed for another term with only a write-in candidate opposing him come November in this seat representing parts of Duval County.

House Seat 18: Rep. Ronald Doc Renuart, R-Jacksonville, who represents parts of Duval and St. Johns counties, looks to be in solid shape for another term. Renuart had around $50,000 in the bank at the end of July, while Tom Collins, his Democratic opponent, had a little more than $6,000. Collins is a leader of Democrats in the area and had an impressive career as a university administrator, but he needs to increase his fund-raising to make a dent against the incumbent.

House Seat 19: Despite being the most prominent Republican in the House to oppose SB 6, its smooth sailing for Rep. Mike Weinstein, R-Orange Park, who was the only candidate to qualify in this race. Weinstein will have two more years to represent parts of Clay, Duval and St. Johns counties.

House Seat 20: Rep. Bill Proctor, R-St. Augustine, represents parts of Clay, Flagler and St. Johns counties. Proctor has spent more than $45,000 and had less than $10,000 on hand at the end of July. He faces a challenge for the Republican nomination from Alan Kelso, a conservative businessman from St. Augustine. Despite having loaned his campaign more than $8,000, Kelso had less than $2,000 at the end of July -- and his spending is decreasing. Proctor is a favorite, but not a heavy one,to win the Republican nomination. The winner will take on Democratic candidate Doug Courtney come November.
