House Seats 1-5: Despite Two Open Seats, Republicans in Charge on the Panhandle

August 13, 2010 - 6:00pm

House Seat 1: With Rep. Greg Evers, R-Baker, running for the Senate, four candidates have jumped in the Republican primary for his seat, representing parts of Escambia, Okaloosa and Santa Rosa counties. Helped by loaning his campaign $50,000, Doug Broxson has spent more than $157,000 and had around $25,000 left at the end of June. Greg Brown had around $20,000 left to challenge Broxson. Two other candidates, Ricky Perritt and Ferd Salomon, will be hard-pressed to catch up to Broxson and Brown. The winner of the Republican primary takes on independent Mathias Venditto in November. There is no Democratic candidate in the race.

House Seat 2: Republican leader Clay Ingram is the man to beat for the House seat being vacated by Rep. Dave Murzin, R-Pensacola, who represents parts of Escambia County. Ingram has $30,000 in the bank while his opponent in the Republican primary, former Florida Highway Patrol District Commander David Karasek, had less than $10,000 at the end of July. The winner takes on a write-in candidate come November. There is no Democratic candidate in the race.

House Seat 3: Former Escambia County School Board Member Claudia Brown-Curry has the Democratic nomination to challenge Rep. Clay Ford, R-Pensacola, who represents parts of Escambia and Santa Rosa counties. Brown-Curry has made two unsuccessful bids to be superintendent of schools and appears headed for another defeat unless she makes drastic progress with her fund-raising. At the end of July, Ford had a more-than-healthy advantage in the bank to retain his seat.

House Seat 4: Despite winning a special election earlier in the year, Rep. Matt Gaetz, R-Shalimar, is the only candidate this year for this seat covering parts of Okaloosa and Santa Rosa counties.

House Seat 5: Representing all of Holmes and Washington counties and parts of Jackson, Okaloosa and Walton counties, Rep. Brad Drake, R-Eucheeanna, will have another two years in the House. He is the only candidate in the race.
