Intercity Bus Service Beats Railroads in New Study

Warren Buffett and Barack Obama see trains as a green wave back to the future, but an emerging fleet of intercity buses is passing them by.

"Entrepreneurial immigrants from China and recently privatized British transportation companies have developed a new model for intercity bus operations that provides travelers with faster service at dramatically reduced fares," Randal O'Toole says in a new study for the libertarian-leaning CATO Institute.

Happy 50th - GOP Celebrates Obama's Birthday ... And Low Poll Numbers

The Republican National Committee wants to wish President Barack Obama a happy birthday (he turns 50 today), but also remind him of his sagging poll numbers in Florida released today.

Obama's approval rating is 44 percent in Florida, with 50 percent disapproving of his performance, according to a Quinnipac survey taken before the debt deal was announced. After the deal, his disapproval rating ticked up to 51 percent.

New Study: American Sugar Industry Remains Big Jobs, Revenue Generator

Meeting in Stowe, Vt. -- a town that calls itself the "Maple Sugar Capital of the World" -- Americas sugar industry learned Wednesday that it is still generating nearly 130,000 direct and indirect jobs and almost $20 billion in annual revenue. That's according to a study released Wednesday at the 28th International Sweetener Symposium.

State Water Rules Discussed

Environmentalists, industrial water users and bureaucrats on Wednesday continued trying to determine how Florida might be able to police its own water cleanliness to avert a federal takeover of water quality in the state.

For hours, Department of Environmental Protection staffers slogged through the details of what they hope will be a slate of water standards for Florida lakes, rivers, springs and other freshwater bodies acceptable to federal officials who have established a set of criteria of their own that many business groups in the state say would be too pricey.

Gov. Scott Staffer Dempsey Heading to Enterprise Florida

Hayden Dempsey, an adviser to Gov. Rick Scott on legislative affairs and policy development, is leaving the governor's office to join the board of Enterprise Florida.
Dempsey submitted a resignation letter to the governor, and is effective Aug. 12. Jon Costello, who currently serves as Scott's legislative affairs director, will take over Dempsey's role.
