Gabrielle Giffords 'Lifts Up' a House in Need

There was hardly a dry eye in the House Monday when Rep. Gabrielle Giffords entered the chamber to cast a vote on debt-ceiling legislation.

"This is what we all needed," an emotional Florida Congressman Bill Posey was heard saying. "This is the uplift we all needed." Posey, of course, is a Republican, Giffords a Democrat.

Giffords' appearance nevertheless set the campaign wheels in motion in her home state of Arizona, where speculation is increasing whether she'll seek re-election next year or run for retiring Sen. Jon Kyl's U.S. Senate seat.

Debt Deal Clears House Easily, But No One Likes It

July 31, 2011 - 6:00pm

A last-minute debt and deficit package easily passed the House of Representatives Monday night, but was roundly thrashed by the right and left.

The measure, which is expected to clear the Senate on Tuesday, includes $3 trillion in budget cuts and a two-step, $2.4 trillion increase in the national debt ceiling.

The deal was demanded by administration officials and business groups that said upping the $14.3 trillion debt ceiling was essential to averting a government default by midnight Tuesday.

House Easily OKs Debt Deal; Senate Approval Expected

The House of Representatives on Monday night approved a plan to raise the nation's debt ceiling and cut future federal spending.

The vote wasn't close. The final tally for passage was 269-161, with Republicans backing the measure 174-66.

But approval of the deal was bittersweet at best, as the debt and deficit package was thrashed by conservatives and liberals alike.

Immigration Policy One of Rick Scott's Legislative Priorities

August 1, 2011 - 6:00pm

When lawmakers begin preparing for next year's legislative session in September, one of their priorities should be taking another look at laws dealing with immigrants, Gov. Rick Scott said Monday.

Scott said the Legislature missed its best opportunity to do something about illegal immigration last session, because it's a debate that's "better to have in a non-election year than an election year" because things can get "blown out of proportion" during election years.

"We should have gotten something done on immigration," Scott said.

The Day of the Hobbits

Charlie Crist Gives $2,000 to One of Allen West's Democratic Foes

Former Gov. Charlie Crist continues to earn the enmity of the Republican Party, this time by giving $2,000 to a would-be opponent of U.S. Rep. Allen West.

The Politico, via the Broward-Palm Beach New Times, reported that Crist gave two $1,000 contributions to Patrick Murphy, a Democrat seeking to unseat West, R-Plantation.

Murphy, like Crist a lapsed Republican, will face Palm Beach Mayor Lois Frankel in the Democratic primary in CD 22.
