Berman Bill Would Restore Some Gun Limitations

Months after lawmakers approved a measure to overrule cities and counties with get-tough gun laws, a Palm Beach County lawmaker on Tuesday introduced a bill to begin restoring some limits on where residents can carry guns.

Saying she hopes to at least generate debate, Rep. Lori Berman, D-Delray Beach, filed a proposal (HB 1087) to bar handguns from child care centers and government buildings.

Marco Rubio at Odds With GOP House Over Tax-Cut Vote

Florida GOP congressmen flailed the Democratic-led Senate on Tuesday for passing a two-month extension of payroll tax cuts. But no one mentioned that one of their own was among the "aye" votes.

Sen. Marco Rubio was among a majority of Senate Republicans who voted for the two-month amendment that undercut the House's one-year authorization.

House Republicans Raise the Stakes in Payroll Tax Showdown

The Republican-led House called on the Democratic-controlled Senate to return to Capitol Hill to approve a one-year extension of the payroll tax cut.

On a party-line vote of 229-193, the House on Tuesday rejected a Senate amendment that authorized only two-month extensions of the tax cut and unemployment benefits.

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid adjourned his chamber Saturday, with no plans to reconvene. If an agreement is not reached by Jan. 1, the tax cut will expire.

Republican presidential hopeful former U.S. Sen. Rick Santorum of Pennsylvania unveiled two major endorsements on Tuesday as he looks to appeal to religious and social conservatives in order to win the Iowa caucus in two weeks. On Tuesday, former Republican gubernatorial hopeful Bob Vander Plaats, now president and CEO of the Iowa Family Leader, and Chuck Hurley, president of the Iowa Family Policy Center, announced that they were backing Santorums bid for the nomination.
