FPL Files for Base Rate Increase

Florida Power & Light notified regulators Tuesday that it wants to increase base rates by $695 million next year, as the utility prepares to open a new power plant and faces growing infrastructure costs.

The notification is the first step in a months-long process that will involve the state Public Service Commission and representatives of consumers and business groups examining FPL's finances.

Scott, Salazar Express Optimism for Everglades

State and federal leaders Tuesday expressed optimism and the need for cooperation for the future of the Everglades, calling for more partnerships with -- rather than continuing to punish -- ranchers and farmers who work alongside the River of Grass.

Gov. Rick Scott downplayed the increase in funding hes requested for Everglades maintenance, saying the key is to spend any money correctly, during a panel discussion that was part of the Everglades Water Supply Summit at the Augustus B. Turnbull III Florida State Conference Center in Tallahassee.

GOP Taunts Bill Nelson for 'Running' From Obama

President Obama will be in Orlando on Thursday to talk about tourism. And like Democratic senators who skipped Obama appearances in other states, Bill Nelson will be nowhere in sight.

Obama is scheduled to be at Walt Disney World, where a White House aide said the president will "unveil a strategy that will significantly help boost tourism and travel."

Nelson's office told reporters that a scheduling conflict will prevent the Democratic senator from appearing with the president -- a statement that was quickly mocked by two of Nelson's Republican foes.

George LeMieux Builds His Team on the First Coast

Former U.S. Sen. George LeMieux, now running in the Republican primary to take on Democrat incumbent U.S. Sen. Bill Nelson, unveiled his team on the First Coast on Tuesday.
