Amid Cries for More Cash, $100,000+ School Salaries Soar 818 Percent

The number of Florida school employees earning $100,000 or more jumped 818 percent from 2005 to 2010, a new report shows.

By contrast, the ranks of private- and public-sector workers making $100,000-plus inched up only 7 percent during the same period, according to the Foundation for Government Accountability.

In 2005, just 103 of Florida's public-education employees earned $100,000 or more. By 2010, that number had swelled to 946, the FGA said.

Five Florida Counties Open Early Voting Monday

Because of a civil rights law, election officials in five Florida counties are at work on Martin Luther King Jr. Day.

Early voting for the Jan. 31 GOP primary begins Monday in five Florida counties: Collier, Hardee, Hendry, Hillsborough and Monroe.

For the rest of the state, the early voting period gets under way next week.

Scott, Bondi Statements on Martin Luther King Jr. Day

Gov. Rick Scott and Attorney General Pam Bondi released the following statements on Martin Luther King Jr. Day on Jan. 16.

Gov. Scott:

Edison College Names Former Rep. Goodlette Interim President

Former state representative Dudley Goodlette was given a $200,000 contract Saturday to repair the image of Edison State College, filling in for the suspended president who was earning $837,000 a year.

The Edison State board of trustees selected Goodlette, a former trustee who spent eight years in the state Legislature, as the interim president over Miami-Dade College provost Kathie Sigler.

The contract for the Naples Republican is good until Aug. 1.

Seminoles Say Pam Bondi Dealt 'Shock'n Y'all' to Gaming Interests

Two Seminole Tribe leaders are praising Attorney General Pam Bondi for her recent opinion that any effort to expand slot-machine gaming in Florida via public referendum is illegal.

James Billie, council chairman, and Tony Sanchez Jr., board president, said Bondi's defense of the state's 2010 gaming compact brought a strong dose of shockn yall to fast-track gaming interests in Gadsden and Washington counties.

Christian Family Coalition to Host Rick Santorum Tele-Town Tuesday

The Christian Family Coalition will host an online town hall with presidential candidate Rick Santorum Tuesday night.

The public is invited to log on here to reserve a virtual seat for the "Tele-Town Hall," which will begin at 8:30 p.m.
