Attorney General Announces Sentencing in Oxycodone Case

The attorney generals office reports that a 29-year-old Bradenton man received a 26-year sentence Wednesday for trafficking in oxycodone and conspiracy to traffic in oxycodone.

Sentenced by the 12th Judicial Circuit of Florida, Lapar Conley was convicted in December on the charges that were associated with JW Wellness, a pain clinic in Tampa.

The clinic was one of seven the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office, the Florida Department of Health, the Hillsborough County Consumer Protection Agency and Hillsborough County Code Enforcement closed last March.

Local Term Limits Measure Advances in House

Two decades after voters said "eight is enough" for state lawmakers, a House proposal could lead to term limits for sheriffs, tax collectors and other county officials in many parts of the state.

The House Community & Military Affairs Subcommittee on Wednesday narrowly approved a proposed constitutional amendment (HJR 785) that would make clear voters in 20 counties can slap term limits on local officials.

The 8-7 subcommittee vote reflected deep divisions that remain about term limits, which were approved for the Legislature in 1992.

Move Over Bullet Trains, Luxury Buses On Fast Track

While plans for high-speed trains have slowed across the country, intercity buses are hitting the accelerator.

Florida, which rejected a $2.4 billion federal grant to launch high-speed rail service between Tampa and Orlando, is home to some of the fastest-growing bus corridors in the country.

RedCoach, a luxury bus line, increased its Florida ridership by 20 percent last year. The company's routes connect South Florida, Orlando, Gainesville and Tallahassee.

JMI Joins Obama Health-Care Challenge, Argues Law is 'Invalid'

The James Madison Institute, a prominent think tank in Tallahassee that backs free-market solutions and a limited government, has joined on to the constitutional challenge launched by Florida and 25 other states against the health-care law backed by President Barack Obama. The U.S. Supreme Court will hear the case later this year. JMI filed an amicus brief arguing that the Medicaid expenses affiliated with the Affordable Care Act will damage the states.

Connie Mack Takes Aim at Bill Nelson and Obama

Republican Congressman Connie Mack, who is running in the GOP primary to challenge Democrat U.S. Sen. Bill Nelson, weighed in on the incumbent avoiding President Barack Obamas appearance at the Magic Kingdom on Thursday.

"Is Senator Nelson running from the president he has been in lockstep with 98 percent of the time, or embracing the notion that announcing another, revised economic plan in Fantasyland could possibly be rooted in reality?" Mack asked in a statement sent to Sunshine State News.

George LeMieux Links Barack Obama to Bill Nelson

Former U.S. Sen. George LeMieux took aim at President Barack Obama and Democrat U.S. Sen. Bill Nelson on Wednesday when he weighed in on Obamas talk at Walt Disney World on Thursday -- which Nelson will be skipping. LeMieux is running for the Republican nomination to challenge Nelson in November.

Scotts to Host Governor's Mansion Reception for Martinez

Former Gov. Bob Martinez will return to the governor's mansion tonight.

Gov. Rick Scott and first lady Ann Scott will host a reception to honor Martinez starting at 6 p.m. to mark the 25th anniversary of the former Tampa mayor's taking office.

Martinez, now a lobbyist with the law firm Holland & Knight, was the second Republican since Reconstruction to be elected to Florida's governor's office.
