Rick Scott to Attend Gen. Craig McKinley's Retirement Ceremony

Gov. Rick Scott will be in at the Saint Frances Barracks Parade Field in St. Augustine Friday afternoon to attend the retirement ceremony for Gen. Craig McKinley.

McKinley, an Air Force general, was the 26th chief of the National Guard Bureau.He has served in that position since 2008.

He is the first officer from the National Guard to ever achieve the grade of a four-star general.

The ceremony gets underway at 3 p.m.

Florida's Unemployment Dips to 8.7 Percent in September

The unemployment mark for Florida dipped to 8.7 percent in September, down 0.1 percent from August and July.

The state Department of Economic Opportunity noted the mark is 1.7 percentage points below where Floridas unemployment stood in September 2011.

Florida still lags behind the U.S. unemployment rate of 7.8 percent.

Republican David Rivera may live in a swirling black hole of legal problems and corruption allegations, but political analysts who know him and his South Florida district are raising a yellow flag: Don't count the freshman congressman out.

Rivera, 48, considered the incumbent in the newly redrawn CD 26, is up against party-line Democrat Joe Garcia -- a candidate he beat handily in 2010.

But less than four weeks from the general election, Rivera -- a former state representative -- is losing his bid for re-election.

DEO Setting Aside Money to Sue Digital Domain

State officials are planning to ask lawmakers to set aside money to go after a bankrupt company that received millions in government aid.

The Department of Economic Opportunity said in a legislative budget request made public this week that it will ask legislators to earmark $500,000 to hire outside counsel to try to recoup at least some of the $20 million in incentives doled out by the state to Digital Domain.

A three-judge panel of the Florida 1st District Court of Appeal heard oral arguments Thursday afternoon in Democratic state Rep. Mack Bernards continued challenge of his narrow August primary election defeat.

Shortly after concluding arguments on behalf of client Rep. Mack Bernard, D-West Palm Beach, before a three-judge panel of theFlorida 1st District Court of Appeal, former Republican state representative J.C. Planas told Sunshine State News another of his clients, Rep. John Patrick Julien, D-North Miami, will "probably" be appealing his own trial court defeat to the Florida House of Representatives.

"We're looking at a House challenge," Planas told the News.

Rick Scott Goes CSI-Orlando for ‘Work Day’

Gov. Rick Scott slipped in his 14th Lets Get to Work" Day on Thursday, heading to Orlando where he spent time in the Florida Department of Law Enforcements Orlando Regional Operations Center.

Scott spent time as a crime lab analyst, processed DNA evidence from local agencies, checked out a gun in the firearms section and went online with the cybercrimes unit in their pursuit of computer criminals including online predators.
