Highway Safety Wants $23 Million for New Camera-Ready License Plates

The state highway safety agency is pushing for a new license plate that's easier for cameras to read to save money on lost tolls and fines.

In its proposed budget for the coming year, released Monday and set for approval by Gov. Rick Scott and the Cabinet later this month, the agency says it wants lawmakers to approve the use of more than $23 million in various existing fees to buy new plates with a goal of replacing all plates within two years.

A Tallahassee police officer is the defendant in yet another civil suit, this one alleging that she "willful[ly] and malicious[ly]" violated the First Amendment rights of a local activist.

The lawsuit, filed in the United States District Court for the Northern District of Florida, says that Officer Annette Garrett used computers owned by the Tallahassee Police Department to delete unflattering information posted by city watchdog Robert Brayshaw on websites like scribd.com, slideshare.com, calameo.com, and Wikipedia.

Florida Democratic House Leadership Endorses Retention of State Supreme Court Justices

State Rep. Perry Thurston (D-Plantation), the incoming House Democratic Leader, issued an "Open Letter to Floridians" Monday regarding Floridas judiciary. In the letter, Thurston urges Floridians to vote no on Floridas Amendment 5,andyes to retaining Florida Supreme Court justices Barbara Pariente, R. Fred Lewis, and Peggy Quince.
