Running for Office? Avoid Negative Labels 'Tea Party' and 'Liberal'

No wonder a candidate doesn't want to be called a "liberal," or see his name linked to the "tea party." According to a Rasmussen Reports 1,000-likely-voter poll, voters across the nation still see those as the two most negative political labels.

Of the two, the "tea party" label is considered the worse, with 44 percent of those polled in a telephone survey calling the t-words bad news; 26 percent say they're positive words; another 26 percent think of them as somewhere in between.

Florida, Rick Scott Honor ‘Exceptional’ Employers of Disabled

Florida recognized seven businesses for being exceptional employers of people with disabilities on Thursday.

Employment is one of my top priorities, as most people know, and that includes people with disabilities, Gov. Rick Scott stated in a release.

I am happy to see so many businesses that are inclusive of all individuals in their companys work force. There is always an opportunity to be more inclusive. I hope additional companies will follow suit and be open to considering all people who can compete for a position.

FPL Rate Proposal Challenged in Supreme Court

October 17, 2012 - 6:00pm

In a highly unusual move, a state consumer advocate asked the Florida Supreme Court on Wednesday to block regulators from considering a controversial rate settlement proposed by Florida Power & Light.

Public Counsel J.R. Kelly, whose office represents consumers statewide in utility issues, wants to halt the Florida Public Service Commission from acting on the proposed settlement, which was announced in August by FPL and some major power users. Kelly said in a petition filed with the court that a settlement should not go forward without his office agreeing to it.

Adam Hasner and Lois Frankel in a Dead Heat at 47 Percent

October 17, 2012 - 6:00pm

Congressional District 22 -- rock-ribbed conservative Adam Hasner vs. outspoken liberal Lois Frankel -- has something many districts do not: more than a quarter of its voters are up for grabs. They don't belong to any party.

Yet, a Sunshine State News Poll of 750 likely voters in the district shows that only 6 percent of the undecideds remain that way.

Conducted by Voter Survey Service (VSS) of Harrisburg, Pa. on Oct. 14-16, the poll puts Republican Hasner and Democrat Frankel dead even at 47 percent.

As two of Florida's three Haitian-born legislators contest their primary election defeats through the courts, one of them is insisting his conflict isn't just with his opponent, but with the very leadership of his own Democratic Party.

Only Republican Gaffes Dominate Presidential Coverage

October 17, 2012 - 6:00pm

Most political pundits know that presidential debates, particularly these absurd "town hall" debacles, are more about who makes a gaffe or has an "oops moment" than about who brings the better policy to the table.

Thanks, Doc
