Andy Gardiner: Florida Legislature Set to Land Budget Plane By Session End

Florida politicos should expect the 2015 special session to end slightly early. Senate President Andy Gardiner, R-Orlando, said Wednesday he anticipates wrapping up budget negotiations by Tuesday, June 16. That means state lawmakers will vote on the final budget next Friday, June 19, a day before the scheduled end of session. 

Legislators have been chugging ahead with budget negotiations since the beginning of the month, working into the weekend for meetings deciding allocations in various areas of the state budget.

On Tuesday, the U.S. House passed the Permanent Internet Tax Freedom Act (PITFA) on a voice vote, sending the measure to the U.S. Senate, as the Florida delegation rallied behind it. 

Patrick Murphy Doubles Down on Raising the Minimum Wage

U.S. Rep. Patrick Murphy, D-Fla., running for the Democratic nomination to replace U.S. Sen. Marco Rubio, R-Fla., in 2016, on Wednesday doubled down on his support for raising the minimum wage. 

“What helps workers, businesses, and the economy as a whole?” Murphy asked on Wednesday. “Raising the minimum wage. That's why I'm sponsoring the Raise the Wage Act in the House. The Raise the Wage Act would raise the federal minimum wage to $12 an hour by 2020, and it would benefit more than 2.2 million Floridians.

Florida U.S. Senate Race Wide-Open in 2016, Poll Finds

A new poll shows a wide-open race to replace U.S. Sen. Marco Rubio, R-Fla., in 2016 with many voters not familiar with some of the top contenders. Rubio, currently running for the Republican presidential nomination, has said he will not run for a second Senate term. 

St. Leo University released a poll which shows 42 percent of those surveyed intend to vote for the Democrat while 39 percent plan to vote for the Republican. But a plurality of voters in both parties are not sure who they want as their candidate. 

Jeb Bush Hears Marco Rubio's Footsteps in 2016 Florida Poll

As former Gov. Jeb Bush readies to launch his bid for the Republican presidential nomination on Monday, a new poll shows he is facing major competition from another favorite son of the Sunshine State. 

St. Leo University released a poll on Wednesday which shows Bush still leads in the Florida primary but U.S. Sen. Marco Rubio, R-Fla., is closing the gap. 

Ted Yoho's Amendment to Ensure Illegal Immigrants Don't Get Federal Housing Assistance Passes House

June 10, 2015 - 10:15am

U.S. Rep. Ted Yoho, R-Fla., successfully amended U.S. Rep. Mario Diaz-Balart’s, R-Fla., Transportation House and Urban Development (THUD) Appropriations bill Tuesday to ensure illegal immigrants would not receive taxpayer funds for housing assistance. 

Yoho’s amendment passed 244-181 with four Democrats breaking ranks to vote for it and three Republicans voting against it. Party lines held firm in Florida with all Republicans, including Diaz-Balart, voting for the amendment and Democrats united against it. 

Ted Yoho: Agriculture, Energy Helped by Limiting Dodd-Frank, CFTC

U.S. Rep. Ted Yoho, R-Fla., supported the “Commodity End-User Relief Act” on Tuesday, insisting that it would help rein in Dodd-Frank, namely the overreach of the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) on agriculture and energy.
