The Florida Legislature is wrestling again with criminal justice reform because of the persistence of Sen. Jeff Brandes, R-St. Petersburg, an outspoken advocate for far-reaching reforms who has good intentions.  As a result, the Senate is positioned to pass an omnibus bill, SB 642, while the House is ready to take up a considerable number of bills that individually encompass some of the same issues.

When it comes to running a business or getting things done in politics, it’s a tried and true lesson that working well with others is the best path to success. The ability to see other points of view, discover compromise, and pursue mutual benefit is a cornerstone principle of making the world and the economy better. That is certainly true when it comes to one of the biggest challenges our world faces: climate change. 

Earlier this week Sen. Jeff Brandes, R-St. Petersburg, introduced a bill allowing medial marijuana patients to be allowed to smoke pot.

It was the first step for a very controversial bill in the upper chamber, but it almost died because of a tie vote which required Senate Democrats to have to quickly call for a reconsideration motion when the bill initially ended up in a tie vote. Once it was reconsidered, the bill passed and the sponsor vowed to work the bill so that it has a chance for consideration later in the session.

Florida’s economy is booming. With the passage of tax reform and smart regulatory reforms, consumers have more money in their pockets to travel and Florida is a prime location. In fact, Florida tourism numbers reached a record high in the first quarter of 2018 and Florida’s economy recently topped $1 trillion. However, recent legislation co-sponsored by our own Republican Rep. Francis Rooney would hike all Americans’ gas prices and jeopardize Florida’s economy.
