House and Senate budget negotiators struck a deal on a state spending plan Monday night moments before the stroke of midnight, pouring $301 million into projects at the last minute and closing out one of the more-raucous legislative debates in recent years.

Florida Education Association Appeals Dismissal of Voucher Program Lawsuit

Florida's largest teachers' union will appeal a District Court judge's decision to dismiss a lawsuit against the state's Tax Credit Scholarship program. 

The suit pits the Florida Education Association of 137,000 teachers against a program which gives 70,000 students (most of whom are low-income minorities) scholarships to attend private schools around the state. 

Leon County Circuit Court Judge George Reynolds dismissed the lawsuit last month, deciding the FEA and other plaintiffs didn't have standing to pursue legal action against the program.

Jeb Bush announced on Monday, at an event at Miami-Dade College, that he is running for president, but the former Florida governor is also running against history -- and not just because a political dynasty has never produced three presidents. Bush and U.S. Sen. Marco Rubio, R-Fla., are hoping a Floridian can win the biggest prize in American politics.

In his campaign launch, Bush focused on his record in Tallahassee as he looks to win over conservative primary voters, wary of the former Florida governor’s stance on immigration and support of Common Core.

Gus Bilirakis Proposes Tax Credits for Hurricane, Tornado Readiness

With hurricane season upon us, U.S. Rep. Gus Bilirakis, R-Fla., brought out the “Strengthening Homes and Eliminating Liabilities Through Encouraging Readiness” (SHELTER) Act on Friday. The proposed legislation would give tax credits to families and businesses who invest in hurricane and tornado readiness.

Dennis Baxley Helps Launch New GOP Group

Florida Rep. Dennis Baxley, R-Ocala, running in 2016 for an open Florida Senate seat, will help kick off a new Republican group in North Central Florida. 

On Tuesday night in Ocala, Baxley and prominent national conservative leader Lloyd Marcus, the chairman of the of the Conservative Campaign Committee PAC, will launch the  Pacyderm  Club. 

“Our core conservative Republican values are good for restoring America,” Baxley insisted in an email mail on Monday promoting the event.

House Passes $430 Million Tax Cut Package, Sends to Rick Scott for Approval

The Florida House passed a tax cut package crafted by the Florida Senate Monday morning, aiming to save Floridians nearly $430 million in a variety of areas, ranging from cellphone taxes to yacht repairs.

Earlier in the day, the Senate also approved the tax cut package with a 34-2 vote. The Senate then sent the package over to the House where it passed with overwhelming support by a 91-2 vote.
