Ron DeSantis, Tom Rooney Push for More Federal Cybersecurity After OPM Data Breach

Republicans in the Florida congressional delegation are looking for answers after a data breach at the U.S. Office of Personnel Management (OPM) in which more than 4 million federal employees had their data stolen with many signs pointing to China as the culprit.

Jose Felix Diaz, Jose Oliva Named to Leadership Roles for RSLC’s Future Majority Project

Two South Florida Republicans serving in the Florida House will be part of the Republican State Leadership Committee’s (RSLC) Future Majority Project (FMP) as the GOP looks to win over minority voters for the 2016 elections. The RSLC’s mission is “to elect down-ballot, state-level Republican officeholders.”

Republican state Reps. Jose Felix Diaz of Miami and Jose Oliva of Hialeah were named to  the FMP board for the 2016 election cycle on Wednesday, joining more than 25 other Republicans from across the nation. Oliva is on track to become House speaker after the 2018 elections. 

Tom Rooney Backs Everglades Restoration in Interior, Environment Appropriations Bill

U.S. Rep. Tom Rooney, R-Fla., a member of the U.S.  House Appropriations Committee, supported the  Interior, Environment, and Related Agencies Appropriations bill on Tuesday which contained around $150 million for Everglades restoration funding. The Appropriations Committee passed the bill on a 30-21 vote on Tuesday.

Carlos Curbelo Leads the Charge Against Academic Boycott of Israel

Freshman Florida Congressman Carlos Curbelo, along with five colleagues, launched a resolution Tuesday condemning academic boycotts of Israel.

Various groups have floated academic boycotts of Israel, and the American Studies Association (ASA) adopted a boycott measure at the end of 2013. First adopted at the controversial 2001 Durban Conference -- from which Israel and the United States pulled out after it equated Zionism with racism -- enemies of Israel continue to push Boycott, Divestment, and Sanctions (BDS) efforts.

Gus Bilirakis Showcases Tim Murphy's Helping Families in Mental Health Crisis Act

From his perch on the U.S. House Energy and Commerce Health Subcommittee, U.S. Rep. Gus Bilirakis, R-Fla., went to bat for U.S. Rep. Tim Murphy’s, R-Penn., “Helping Families in Mental Health Crisis Act” on Tuesday. Bilirakis noted at a roundtable event on Tuesday that 10 million Americans are suffering from severe mental illness and pointed to reports s from the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) that around 40 percent of them do not get treatment.

Hillary Clinton has the Edge in Florida Even as Voters Think She Can't Be Trusted

A new poll shows former U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton has a slight lead over Sen. Marco Rubio and former Gov. Jeb Bush in Florida, the largest swing state on the map in presidential elections, even as a majority of voters say she can’t be trusted. Clinton leads other Republicans by far wider margins.

Around 11:15 p.m. Monday, as the deadline for getting a deal on the state budget drew closer, Senate Appropriations Chairman Tom Lee, R-Brandon, brought to order a joint House-Senate negotiating committee hammering out the final details of a spending plan.

Shortly after the meeting began, he recognized Jamie DeLoach --- the top staff member for the Senate General Government Appropriations Subcommittee --- to explain the first of several offers that would be swapped back and forth between the two sides. It was an offer on the fine print of the environmental portion of the budget.

If you're wondering why the Legislature didn't restore Florida Forever's once-upon-a-time $300 million for land purchases ... could it be because the program's managers gave lawmakers the perfect excuse?

According to figures provided by House staff, the Florida Forever program is sitting on a pile of unused money -- not just the $12.5 million it was budgeted last year, but a total $84 million.
