Jeff Miller Jumping in Senate Race Next Week, Roll Call Reports

U.S. Rep. Jeff Miller, R-Fla., will announce next week that he is entering the race to replace U.S. Sen. Marco Rubio, R-Fla., Roll Call reported late on Wednesday. Rubio is currently running for the Republican presidential nomination and is not expected to run for a second Senate term in 2016.

Judge Considers Challenge to Abortion Waiting Period

Only days before a new Florida law would start requiring 24-hour waits before women can have abortions, a Leon County circuit judge is considering whether to place a hold on the law while a constitutional challenge goes forward.

The law (HB 633), which passed in April, is slated to go into effect July 1. The day after Gov. Rick Scott signed the law, the American Civil Liberties Union filed a constitutional challenge and sought an emergency injunction.

It was the Senate that declared war on Gov. Rick Scott and the Florida House, and it did so the minute it took up Medicaid expansion.

On Wednesday, Gov. Rick Scott showcased the start of scallop season on Saturday. The season lasts until Sep. 25. Last year, Scott asked for the season to start three days early so the last weekend of June could be included in it.

Florida Retailers Expect a Back-to-School Boom With 10-Day Sales-Tax Holiday

Florida retailers are expecting a busy August as shoppers across the Sunshine State take advantage of a 10-day sales-tax holiday. 

Last week, the Legislature voted to extend the back-to-school tax holiday to 10 days, a large increase from the usual three-day period. Running from Aug. 7 through Aug. 16, there will be no sales tax on clothes, shoes and bags $100 and less, school supplies up to $15 and the first $750 of personal computers.

Kathy Castor: Time for General Kirby Smith to Be Removed from Statuary Hall

With the Confederate flag in the news after the shooting at an AME church in Charleston, S.C., U.S. Rep. Kathy Castor, D-Fla., called for removal of the statue of Gen. Edmund Kirby Smith, the highest ranking Confederate general from Florida, from Statuary Hall in the U.S. Capitol.

Sen. Miguel DLP and Associate Expecting Baby

Congratulations are in order to Sen. Miguel Diaz de la Portilla, R-Coral Gables, and his longtime associate/assistant Elinette Ruiz, who are expecting a baby girl in July.

It will be child No. 4 for this "Papi" DLP, 52, who has two boys in their 20s and a daughter in high school with his first wife Mari. Politicalcortadito.com says it's Ruiz's first child.

Ander Crenshaw Votes to Repeal Medicare's IPAB
