COUNTERPOINT: Conservatives Should Embrace Same-Sex Marriage Decision

As a conservative who has always supported gay marriage, it's difficult for me to understand why so many people of my generation -- the ones who grew up witnessing some of the worst discrimation of the 20th century -- could consistently rage against it.

Thankfully, the Supreme Court has declared that marriage is a basic civil right, older than the Constitution itself. No more bans. What could be a more conservative opinion than that?

Florida Officials React to Supreme Court's Same-Sex Marriage Decision

Florida’s leaders weighed in on Friday after the U.S. Supreme Court struck down same-sex marriage bans at the state level in a 5-4 decision. Justice Anthony Kennedy joined the liberal block in the majority. 

“The Constitution promises liberty to all within its reach, a liberty that includes certain specific rights that allow persons, within a lawful realm, to define and express their identity,” Kennedy wrote in the majority opinion. 

With the ruling, same-sex marriage is recognized across the United States. 

Mario Rubio: States Should Decide Same-Sex Marriage

Weighing in on the Supreme Court decision on Friday striking down same-sex marriage bans at the state level, U.S. Sen. Marco Rubio, R-Fla., said the issue should have been left to the states.

Patrick Murphy on Supreme Court Ruling on Same-Sex Marriage: 'This is a Historic Day in our Nation’s History'

U.S. Rep. Patrick Murphy, D-Fla., cheered the U.S. Supreme Court's decision to strike down bans on same-sex marriage on Friday. Murphy is running for the U.S. Senate in 2016. 

"This is a historic day in our nation’s history,” Murphy said on Friday. “ For too long, same-sex couples have been discriminated against because of who they are and who they love. Today, that ends. We are a nation that prides itself on the diversity of our citizens, and I applaud the Supreme Court’s decision to give same-sex couples equal marriage rights under the law once and for all."
