With DeSantis' Support, SFWMD Governors Expand Python Program

The program that has already eliminated more than 2,500 invasive pythons from Florida's Everglades is about to double down on its success.

With Gov. Ron DeSantis' encouragement and Thursday's vote by the South Florida Water Management District (SFWMD) Governing Board, the Python Elimination Program has been expanded.

Trump Chooses Florida Justices Lagoa and Luck for 11th Circuit Court of Appeals

President Donald J. Trump announced Thursday afternoon his intention to nominate two of Florida's newest Supreme Court justices, Barbara Lagoa and Robert Luck, to serve as circuit judges on the United States Court of Appeals for the 11th Circuit. In so doing, the president likely will reshape the ideological bent of the 11th Circuit.

The president issued the announcement without comment, in a public-pool release from the Office of the Press Secretary.

Contributions Pour in for Assault Weapons Ban

In the wake of two mass shootings in Texas and Ohio last month, contributions flooded into a political committee seeking to ban possession and sale of assault weapons in Florida, according to a new campaign-finance report filed at the state Division of Elections.

Ban Assault Weapons NOW, the political committee behind the proposed constitutional amendment, drew more than 28,000 contributions totaling $595,000 in August, by far the largest amount in a single month since the committee was launched in March 2018.

Gov. Ron DeSantis and his administration want a federal judge to put on hold a challenge to a state law carrying out a constitutional amendment that restored voting rights to felons who have completed their sentences.

The Republican governor and Secretary of State Laurel Lee on Tuesday asked U.S. District Judge Robert Hinkle to put the federal lawsuit on hold until the Florida Supreme Court rules in a related case.

With new reports that the Trump administration is considering sanctioning Turkey for its increased ties to Russia, including buying missile defense systems, U.S. Sen. Rick Scott, R-Fla., encouraged the White House to implement them. 

Scott weighed in on reports that the administration will sanction Turkey for buying S-400 missile systems from Russia.
