Special Master: DeSantis Failed to Make His Case, Reinstate Scott Israel as Broward Sheriff

Delivering a stunning blow to Gov. Ron DeSantis, a special master has recommended the Florida Senate reinstate suspended Broward County Sheriff Scott Israel, after finding the governor failed to prove allegations of neglect of duty and incompetence that sparked the law enforcement official’s suspension.

After the recommendation, Senate President Bill Galvano, R-Bradenton, called a special session next month for the Senate to consider the removal or reinstatement of Israel.

An Angry NRCC Targets Florida Democrats For Wanting to Impeach Trump

With Democrats on Capitol Hill pushing an impeachment inquiry, the fight has spilled over to the Sunshine State. 

This week, the National Republican Congressional Committee (NRCC) served notice to Democrats in swing districts in the Sunshine State that it will make their support of impeaching President Donald Trump a campaign issue in 2020. 

The NRCC took aim at U.S. Rep. Charlie Crist, D-Fla., after he said he backed impeaching Trump.

A former executive director of a state transportation commission has filed a lawsuit alleging she was forced to resign in retaliation for exposing a $5.5 billion budget “irregularity” proposed by the Florida Department of Transportation.

Teddi Pitts also accused the chairman of the Florida Transportation Commission of sexual harassment and gender discrimination in the lawsuit filed last week in Leon County circuit court.

Gov. Ron DeSantis’ administration wants to boost spending next year on a controversial economic-development program, while tourism-marketing money wouldn’t increase, according to budget requests rolled out last week.

During meetings of House budget panels, state agencies outlined proposals that ranged from money to repair National Guard armories damaged by hurricanes Matthew and Michael to funds for joining a national electronic center to exchange voter-registration data with other states.

U.S. Rep. Donna Shalala, D-Fla., has paired up with U.S. Rep. Rashida Tlaib, D-Mich., in bringing out a bill they insist will help protect federal student aid. 

Last week, Shalala, Tlaib and U.S. Rep. Ayanna Pressley, D-Mass., introduced the “Protecting Student Aid Act" (PSA Act), which, they claimed, will “reinvigorate the Student Aid Enforcement Unit within the U.S. Department of Education in order to allow the department to better respond to fraud and abuse within federal student aid programs.”

LNG Exports Continue to Expand on the First Coast

Federal officials continue to showcase the potential of the First Coast on exporting Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG).

Last week, U.S. Sen. Marco Rubio, R-Fla., applauded the Federal Energy Regulatory Committees (FERC) for approving Eagle LNG exporting LNG out of Jacksonville. 

“This decision will allow for the siting, construction, and operation of a new liquefaction, storage, and export terminal facility on the St. Johns River,” Rubio’s office noted.
