Florida is a prime example of the widespread acceptance of the herb not so long ago vilified in the propaganda movie “Reefer Madness.”
Since voters legalized medical marijuana in 2016, Florida is home to more than 266,000 patients whose doctors have authorized them to consume pot in one form or another to treat a variety of ailments.
Florida, the third-largest state in the nation with a rapidly growing population, is widely viewed as a breeding ground for one of the nation’s most-lucrative marijuana industries, a possibility the state’s current marijuana firms are trying to capitalize on.
With a tightly restricted and highly regulated medical-marijuana market, some Florida pot purveyors are pushing an effort to legalize recreational use, an option that could be a significant boon in a state where licenses are selling for more than $50 million on a regular basis.
Meanwhile, would-be operators have filed a slew of lawsuits challenging the state’s restrictions on who can enter the medical marijuana market. To say it is a legal thicket would be an understatement --- not to mention the fact that marijuana remains a no-no under federal law.
That brings us to Jesse Panuccio, a former acting associate U.S. attorney general who oversaw a host of areas at the Department of Justice. Panuccio went to Washington after serving in former Gov. Rick Scott’s administration, where he was the executive director of the Department of Economic Opportunity. Panuccio, a Harvard Law School graduate, also served as Scott’s general counsel.
Panuccio’s bringing his legal expertise back to Tallahassee on Wednesday, with a talk entitled “Marijuana in Florida: Weedy Questions for the Rule of Law” at the Florida State University School of Law, an event sponsored by the Tallahassee Lawyers Chapter of The Federalist Society.
