The run of bad luck in court for environmentalist Maggy Hurchalla and her team continued Wednesday when the Fourth District Court of Appeal in West Palm Beach concluded Circuit Judge William Roby properly excluded the mediation meeting from Hurchalla's public records request for the South Florida Water Management District's shade meeting transcripts.

Corcoran Pushes Changes in State College System

Florida education czar Richard Corcoran bristles at being called a disrupter.

He prefers the gentler label of "transformer," a brand Corcoran burnished during his two-year tenure as speaker of the Florida House of Representatives.

As speaker, the Republican father of six pushed through a series of what were touted as “transformational” education policies that included major expansions of charter schools and private-school vouchers.

And now, as Florida’s education commissioner, Corcoran is aiming to make changes in the state college system.

Donald Trump Holds Narrow Lead Over Democrats in New Poll of Florida

A new poll shows President Donald Trump with a narrow lead in the Sunshine State. Trump won Florida in 2016 and it’s a must-win state for his reelection prospects. 

Florida Atlantic University’s (FAU) Business and Economics Polling Initiative (BEPI) released a poll on Wednesday looking at the president’s standing in the state. 

Trump has the approval of 49 percent of Florida voters while 46 percent of those surveyed disapprove of him. 

Elizabeth Warren Starts Closing in on Joe Biden in Florida

Former Vice President Joe Biden is hearing the footsteps of U.S. Sen. Elizabeth Warren, D-Mass., in Florida, a new poll shows. 

Florida Atlantic University’s (FAU) Business and Economics Polling Initiative (BEPI) released a poll on Wednesday looking at the Democratic presidential primary in the Sunshine State. Biden leads the crowded field with 34 percent with Warren in second at 24 percent. U.S. Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., places third at 14 percent.

Florida Congressional Delegation Rallies to Keep Liaison Offices in VA Hospitals

Florida’s congressional delegation is pushing to quickly adopt legislation requiring the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (DVA) to allow them to staff liaison offices in Veterans Administration (VA) facilities, especially hospitals.

The urgency in passing the "Improving Veterans Access to Congressional Services Act of 2019" was underscored on Aug. 30 when, days after the bill was heard by the House Committee on Veterans Affairs, six Florida lawmakers who share offices in two Florida VA hospitals were informed they were being evicted at year’s end.

Rick Scott Wants to Preserve Trump's 2017 Child Tax-Credit Extension

U.S. Rick Scott, R-Fla., is backing an effort to make permanent one of the tax cuts championed by President Donald Trump in 2017. 

This week, Scott threw his support behind U.S. Sen. Martha McSally’s, R-Ariz., “Child Tax Credit Expansion Act.” Other supporters in the Senate include U.S. Sen. Mike Braun, R-Ind., and U.S. Sen. Joni Ernst, R-Iowa. 

Scott weighed in on why he was backing McSally’s proposal and pointed to his record cutting taxes during his two terms in Tallahassee.  

Teachers in 11 Districts Have Volunteered to Be Trained and Armed

School districts in 11 Florida counties are open to training teachers to carry guns in schools as a defense tactic in case of shooting situations, according to an official with the state Department of Education.

Damien Kelly, director of the state Office of Safe Schools, told the Senate Education Committee on Monday that of the 36 school districts participating in a controversial school “guardian” program, 11 have indicated an interest in arming classroom teachers.

DeSantis Announces Initiatives to Encourage Financial Technology Companies

The governor was joined in Jacksonville by Chief Financial Officer (CFO) Jimmy Patronis, Department of Economic Opportunity (DEO) Executive Director Ken Lawson, Mayor Lenny Curry and business and community leaders from throughout Duval County.
