U.S. Rick Scott, R-Fla., is backing an effort to make permanent one of the tax cuts championed by President Donald Trump in 2017.

This week, Scott threw his support behind U.S. Sen. Martha McSally’s, R-Ariz., “Child Tax Credit Expansion Act.” Other supporters in the Senate include U.S. Sen. Mike Braun, R-Ind., and U.S. Sen. Joni Ernst, R-Iowa.

Scott weighed in on why he was backing McSally’s proposal and pointed to his record cutting taxes during his two terms in Tallahassee.

“Over my eight years as governor of Florida, we cut taxes nearly 100 times and returned more than $10 billion back to hardworking taxpayers,” Scott said. “We completely turned our economy around and added nearly 1.7 million jobs for families across the state. I’m proud to build on our efforts by joining Senator McSally to sponsor the Child Tax Credit Extension Act, which will give families across the nation even more of their hard-earned money back and continue our economic growth.”

"Having kids is expensive,” said McSally. “I fought to have the child tax credit doubled and signed into law to ease the financial burden on new parents. My bill would preserve the child tax credit indefinitely, allowing families nationwide to continue to grow.”

“President Donald Trump’s historic tax cuts lowered taxes for Main Street workers and middle-class families, but unfortunately some parts of the law will sunset and I’m proud to support legislation that will make the child tax credit permanent,” said Braun.

The child tax credit approved in 2017 can go as high as $2,000 for every qualified child under the age of 17 at the end of the tax year. There are bills in the U.S. House to extend the 2017 child tax credit which is set to expire in 2025.
