Proposed Resolution Seeks to Put Medicaid Expansion Back on the 2020 Ballot

A month after a proposed constitutional amendment to expand Medicaid under the Affordable Care Act (ACA) was withdrawn from the 2020 ballot, a South Florida Democrat has pre-filed a resolution asking lawmakers to put it back.

Sen. Annette Taddeo of Miami Thursday submitted Senate Joint Resolution 224, which requests the Legislature ask voters to consider a measure to “provide Medicaid coverage to persons under age 65 with an income equal to or below 138 percent of the federal poverty level.”

A Florida congressman’s proposal to ensure convicted child molesters lose their federal pensions is gaining momentum on Capitol Hill as a top GOP leader announced his support for it.  

Back in July, U.S. Rep. Ross Spano, R-Fla., brought out the “No Pensions for Pedophiles Act.” The bill would amend the Hiss Act to ensure federal contributions to pensions would be denied to individuals who are convicted of federal crimes connected to child molestation.

Enterprise Florida Looks to Expand Economic Ties With Colombia

Enterprise Florida, Inc. (EFI) is looking to expand economic ties between Florida and Colombia. 

EFI, a public-private partnership, defines itself as the “principal economic development organization for Florida” and its mission is “to expand and diversify the state’s economy through job creation.”

On Friday, EFI announced it will lead a delegation of Florida businesses, including small businesses, to Bogota in November.

The Florida congressman who leads Republicans on the U.S. House Asia and the Pacific Subcommittee cheered protesters who took to the streets of Hong Kong in recent weeks against the communist regime’s policies. 

The protests, which started over a proposed extradition policy that could lead activists in Hong Kong to be deported to mainland China, have resulted in the shutdown of the Hong Kong airport. After months of protests, Hong Kong’s leadership announced on Wednesday it would not pursue the proposed policy.

Florida’s “last, best hope” to save Apalachicola Bay’s multi-million-dollar shellfish industry will play out Oct. 17 before a federal judge in Albuquerque, N.M.

Senior U.S. Circuit Court Judge Paul J. Kelly, appointed by the U.S. Supreme Court in August 2018 to serve as a “special master” to oversee Florida’s 2013 lawsuit against Georgia, said the hearing would be nearly two months earlier than originally scheduled.

Assault Weapons Ban Could Cost Florida $26.9 Million in Lost Revenue

If Floridians approve a constitutional amendment next year to block possession of assault weapons, a panel of economists on Thursday estimated the state budget could take a $26.9 million hit in lost revenue.

But the head of the Legislature’s Office of Economic and Demographic Research said the amount would likely be smaller because revenue lost in taxes from gun sales would be balanced out with other purchases that can be taxed.

Educator Michael Hepburn is gearing up for a rematch with U.S. Rep. Donna Shalala, D-Fla., taking her on in the Democratic primary in an important South Florida congressional race. 

Hepburn ran in the crowded Democratic primary for the open seat last year but was left in the dust by Shalala who went on to flip the seat from the GOP in November. But Hepburn had reeled in the support of New York Democrat Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez who was fresh off her upset of then-U.S. Rep. Joe Crowley, D-NY, in the primary.
