Joe Biden Leads Primary Field, Trump Losing Ground on Economy, Poll Shows

Former Vice President Joe Biden remains on top of the crowded Democratic primary field, according to a new poll. 

On Wednesday morning, Quinnipiac University released a poll of Democratic voters and Democratic leaning independents which shows Biden out front with 32 percent. U.S. Sen. Elizabeth Warren, D-Mass., stands in second with 19 percent followed by U.S. Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., with 15 percent. 

State Seeks to Scuttle Fight over Hospital Money

Attorney General Ashley Moody’s office wants a judge to toss out a lawsuit challenging a legislative decision that would strip Medicaid money from two South Florida hospitals with ownership ties to a nursing home where residents died after Hurricane Irma.

Moody’s office, representing Agency for Health Care Administration Secretary Mary Mayhew, filed a 32-page document last week arguing that a Leon County circuit judge should dismiss the lawsuit by Larkin Community Hospital and Larkin Community Hospital Palm Springs Campus, both in Miami-Dade County.

FDOT Launches M-CORES to Study Work on Three Transportation Corridors

The Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) hosted a meeting of the three Multiuse Corridors of Regional Economic Significance (M-CORES) Task Force on Tuesday at the Tampa Convention Center, marking the start of the program’s study phase.

To translate, the M-CORES Task Forces' job is to study the potential for transportation and other infrastructure projects in these three Florida corridors:

  • Suncoast Connector, extending from Citrus County to Jefferson County;

Search to Continue for Bodies at Dozier School

Forensic experts are gearing up to conduct a high-tech sweep of the grounds at a notorious Northwest Florida reform school where survivors remain convinced bodies of long-lost boys are still concealed.

University of South Florida forensic anthropologist Erin Kimmerle said Monday her team intends to return next month to the former Arthur G. Dozier School for Boys in Marianna to conduct light imaging detection and ranging tests, known as LIDAR.

Corcoran Threatens No-Nonsense Investigation into The Able Trust's Misuse of Millions of Dollars

Florida Education Commissioner Richard Corcoran has threatened a criminal investigation into a state organization that helps Floridians with disabilities, after learning about potential misuse of millions of dollars and alleged “incompetence” on the part of its leadership.

His threats, outlined in an Aug. 15 letter obtained by The News Service of Florida, have already prompted a leadership shake-up at The Able Trust, a non-profit organization for the state education department’s Division of Vocational Rehabilitation.

South Florida Democrats File Holocaust Education Proposal in Tallahassee

Two Democrats from South Florida in the Legislature want to increase the focus on Holocaust education in the Sunshine State. 

On Monday, state Sen. Kevin Rader, D-Boca Raton, and state Rep. Rep. Tina Polsky, D-Boca Ration, brought out the “Holocaust Education Act.” The legislation would have the Florida Department of Education create curriculum standards on teaching the Holocaust and have traditional public schools, charter schools and private schools which accept vouchers follow it. 

The two South Florida Democrats’ offices weighed in on why the bill was needed. 

Florida Congressmen: Make '9-8-8' the National Suicide Hotline Number

Four congressmen from the Sunshine State are backing a proposal to have easily remembered “9-8-8” as the code for the national suicide hotline.

Last week, U.S. Rep. Seth Moulton, D-Mass., and U.S. Rep. Chris Stewart, R-Utah, brought out the “National Suicide Hotline Designation Act.” The bill would designate “9-8-8” as a universal telephone number for the national suicide prevention and mental health crisis hotline system, which is run by the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline and the Veteran’s Crisis Line.
