All 67 Florida counties are now under an emergency order as the state awaits a powerful hit, likely early next week, from Hurricane Dorian.

Gov. Ron DeSantis on Thursday expanded throughout Florida a state of emergency he had declared a day earlier in 26 counties along the East Coast and in some inland areas. The expansion came after DeSantis received updates on the storm during visits to the National Hurricane Center in Miami and the Brevard County Emergency Operations Center.

South Florida Dems: Give Sales Tax Exemption on Home Improvement Items to Seniors, Disabled

Two South Florida Democrats proposed a bill this week to exempt the sales tax for home improvement purchases for seniors and the disabled. 

State Sen. Lori Berman, D-Delray Beach, and state Rep. Joe Casello, D-Boynton Beach, teamed up to propose a bill would exempt bed transfer handles, bed rails, grab bars and shower seats from sales tax. 

The two sponsors insisted their bill would help seniors and the disabled remain independent and living in their own homes. The South Florida Democrats have championed the proposal before. 

Ben Carson: HUD Sending Almost $5 Million to Palm Beach County to Help Homeless Youth

The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) announced on Thursday it is sending almost $5 million to Palm Beach County to help end youth homelessness in South Florida. 

HUD is sending  $4,932,359 to Palm Beach County Board of County Commissioners, part of $75 million being sent around the nation through its Youth Homelessness Demonstration Program (YHDP).

Gov. Ron DeSantis issued Executive Order 19-189 Wednesday, declaring a state of emergency for counties in the path of Hurricane Dorian. The governor is urging all Floridians on the East Coast to prepare for impacts. The latest forecasts from the National Hurricane Center project Hurricane Dorian will make landfall on Florida’s East Coast as a major hurricane.

Morgan Warns Gillum Not to Run Again

John Morgan, a political rainmaker, on Wednesday threatened to sue Andrew Gillum, if the Florida Democratic gubernatorial candidate runs for office again. 

Morgan’s remarks to the Tiger Bay Club in Tallahassee were an escalation of a public tirade over Gillum’s decision to sit on more than $3 million ahead of the November election, which the Democrat narrowly lost to Republican Gov. Ron DeSantis.

FEA Wants a 10 Percent Pay Hike for Teachers, $2.4 Billion Increase in Education Funding

A week after the state Board of Education approved a $22.3 billion fiscal 2021 budget request, Florida's largest teachers union crafted an alternate proposal that includes a 10 percent across-the-board pay raise for every public school employee in Florida.

The salary increase is part of the Florida Education Association’s (FEA) 10-year, $22 billion “Decade of Progress” initiative that, if implemented, would lift Florida from the bottom 10 nationally in per-student funding into the top 10.

'Hurricane' Dorian Could Hit Florida as a Category 3

Floridians, particularly those along the East Coast, are being told to prepare for a major hurricane that could hit the state during the Labor Day weekend.

The storm, which remained named Tropical Storm Dorian on Wednesday, is projected to reach the state Sunday or Monday as a potential major hurricane, with winds topping 110 mph.

Buchanan Would Expand Federal Holocaust Education Assistance Program Fund

On Wednesday, U.S. Rep. Vern Buchanan, R-Fla., pushed for a federal fund to teach students about the Holocaust. 

At the start of the year, U.S. Rep. Carolyn Maloney, D-NY, and U.S. Rep. Elise Stefanik, R-NY, introduced the “Never Again Education Act." The bill would have the U.S. Education Department create the Holocaust Education Assistance Program Fund, expanding middle and high school education on the Holocaust. More than 200 members of the House, including Buchanan, are cosponsoring the proposal.
