Florida Unemployment Rate Falls

You might want to crack open a bottle of celebratory wine for this, readers. If you can afford it.

The state's unemployment rate for April was 12 percent, .3 percent lower than March's rate of 12.3 percent, according to statistics released less than an hour ago from the Agency for Workforce Innovation. This is the first time state unemployment has declined in four years.

The state registered 7,196, 600 jobs by the end of April, but job loss continued to outnumber growth, as it has for awhile.

Meek Wants Another $75 Million from BP

While BP has promised to spend $25 million in ads to lure tourists perhaps put off by the oil spill back to Florida, Congressman Kendrick Meek, the frontrunner for the Democratic U.S. Senate nomination, said it was not enough and sent a letter to BP CEO Tony Hayworth asking for another $75 million in ads.

"Obama Oil Spill" Becomes Political Issue for FL Congressional Race

Interesting developments in the 7th Congressional district, where incumbent Republican Congressman John Mica is facing a challenge from Democrat Heather Beaven. From his perch on the the House of Representatives Transportation and Infrastructure Committee, Mica said in a hearing on Wednesday that the Obama administration is to blame for oil spill in the Gulf. Mica said the administration had no plan for a spill and should have pushed for more regulation. Mica even labeled it the Obama oil spill.

Lopez-Cantera Urges Crist to Add Miami-Dade to Counties Impacted by Oil Spill

With oil now caught in the loop current, Rep. Carlos Lopez-Cantera, R-Miami, is calling for Gov. Charlie Crist to add Miami-Dade County to the counties that will be impacted by the oil spill in the Gulf.

It is just a matter of time until the oil spill in the Gulf makes it to the shores in Miami-Dade, said Lopez-Cantera. We need to begin planning ahead so we can minimize the spills impact on our region. This could be an economic and environmental tragedy if we dont have the resources available to deal with this crisis.

Former Agency for Health Administration Secretary Holly Benson, now in a tight primary battle with Lt. Gov. Jeff Kottkamp and prosecutor Pam Bondi for the Republican attorney general nomination, just announced the members of her finance committee.

Names on the list include Leon County Commissioner Bryan Desloge, Blue Cross and Blue Shield Florida Executive Vice President and Chief Operations Officer Duke Livermore, and Joe Negron, a state senator from Palm City.

Rep. Tom Grady Bowing Out

In an email sent to incoming House Speaker Dean Cannon, Rep. Tom Grady, R-Naples, announced he would not be running for re-election. Grady was elected in 2008 and was considered by many to be a rising star in the GOP.

"To be clear," Grady said in the email, "I'm graduating in November from the Florida House, not retiring from public service."
