Gov. Rick Scott will be touring schools in Jacksonville, Orlando and Palm Harbor on Monday, observing students in some of the STEM -- science, technology, engineering, math -- fields and preparing for a school play. Scott is scheduled to be at Darnell-Cookman Middle/High School for the Medical Arts in Jacksonville at 8:45 a.m. By 11:30 a.m., Scott is scheduled to be at Evans High School in Orlando for a visit that is to include meeting with students studying in the schools Academy of Information Technology.

The departure of Lee County Commissioner Tammy Hall from the 19th Congressional District race has helped state Rep. Gary Aubuchon, Hall's former campaign strategist says. "Most of her supporters went over to Gary," Anthony Pedicini told Sunshine State News on Saturday. "He definitely has taken the inside track." The contest to succeed Rep. Connie Mack, R-Naples, remains crowded and contentious, however. Other leading candidates are state Rep. Paige Kreegel, R-Punta Gorda, Trey Radel and Chauncey Goss.

National unemployment stood at 8.2 percent in March, little changed from February, the U.S. Department of Labor announced Friday. Employers added about 120,000 jobs in March, putting the number of out of work at 12.7 million. The numbers are considered somewhat disappointing as economists had projected 210,000 new jobs. The March numbers for Florida will be released later this month.

Two Lake Butler men were charged this week with intentionally setting three fires in Union County last year, Florida Chief Financial Officer and State Fire Marshal Jeff Atwater announced. The men were charged after one was charged with an unrelated armed robbery by the Union County Sheriffs Office and confessed to the fires, according to Atwaters office. The State Fire Marshals Bureau of Fire and Arson Investigations had been looking into the November fires with the sheriffs office and the Lake Butler Volunteer Fire Department.

It's rare that a high-profile political candidate will pick a fight with one of Florida's larger newspapers, but Connie Mack campaign manager Jeff Cohen threw caution to the wind in blasting the Tampa Bay (nee St. Petersburg) Times. For the second time in 30 days, President Barack Obama will be in South Florida to raise campaign cash and deliver a policy talk. Like his March 10 visit to Miami, Obama will appear at a string of fundraisers along the Gold Coast. And as before, he's tacking on a late-developing "official speech" to ensure that the junket's tab is picked up by the taxpayers. Obama reportedly will deliver a speech at Florida Atlantic University in Boca Raton. The White House has released no details on the format of the event, but it's slated to focus on the economy.
